Probably the best of the series and sadly seems to be the last one.

Robin and Strike get tasked to investigate a cold case from 40 years ago when a doctor and mother never came home. Although a prolific serial killer was operating in the area the missing person has never been an acknowledged victim and now her daughter want final closure. However with the lead policeman at the time suffering from a mental breakdown and most of the witnesses dead or moved away, their work is never going to be easy, and they still have an agency to run, which has stretched to a few more staff. . The balcne between the cases and the personal lives of the detectives is shifted to be more details of their lives, and surprisingly this actually works better. The crimes are always somewhat outre and unbelievable, but the hardships Robin and Strike have to endure and the way their personalities interact are realistic and totally believable - even with Rowling's continued Telling of some of their thoughts.

Good fun. ( )

In novel #5 featuring private investigator Strike, Cormoran and his partner Robin take on a cold case from nearly 40 years earlier. Margot Bamborough, a married doctor, disappeared one evening after work and was never seen again. Was she an unknown victim of then-infamous serial killer Dennis Creed? Her daughter Anna, who was just an infant at the time and never knew her mother, hires the agency to find out the truth, if it's there to be found.

I continue to enjoy these Cormoran Strike novels more and more with each new installment. While this one was really long and could've honestly been edited down to a more reasonable length, I still thoroughly enjoyed it, despite the numerous characters and the fact that I sometimes had trouble keeping track of who was who. It was a complicated story line with some seemingly red herrings, but somehow it all came full circle and still managed to surprise me in the end. All of that, in addition to the continuing development of Cormoran and Robin's personal and professional relationship. Good stuff. I think there is at least one more novel coming in the series. I certainly hope so! ( )

Meanwhile, the two get their first cold case, involving a young doctor, Margot Bamborough, who disappeared some 40 years ago. Margot's daughter asks them to help her get closure by finding out what happened to her mother. Speculation at the time attributed her disappearance to an active serial killer in the area, but it was never proven. Strike doesn’t offer much hope but agrees to devote one year to the case.

I have thoroughly enjoyed this series, although this entry is longer than the others and more confusing. It was hard to keep track sometimes. Galbraith (Rowling) has created strong, in-depth characters and very complex plots in this series. I especially have enjoyed the development of the relationship between Strike and Robin over the 5 books in the series. If this is the last in the series, I will miss them.

The original investigation into Margot’s disappearance was complicated by the fact that the first detective on the case had a mental breakdown. Strike and Robin need to decipher his bizarre notes, however, which employed astrological signs and other arcane references, in order to get any leads. [The author was possibly influenced by stories about the real-life never-identified serial killer who operated in Northern California from at least the late 1960s to the early 1970s. The man, calling himself "The Zodiac Killer," sent a series of taunting letters and cards to the San Francisco Bay Area press that included cryptograms full of signs and symbols.] Strike and Robin also have to navigate the tricky shoals of 40-year-old memories and witnesses who have led long lives marked by plenty of secrets they wish to hide. Thank fuck that’s over. Sooo much editing needed here. Note to self: if there’s a sequel, skip it. ( )

This book started out a little slower than the first 4, but in the end i never saw the out come being the way it was. Like the way the inter action between the characters was continued and developed even more. ( )

A scrupulous plotter and master of misdirection, Galbraith keeps the pages turning but, while much of the book is terrific fun, is hardly a hair-raising ride. The languid pace and elderliness of the mystery (and indeed most of the suspects) give the enterprise the cosy air of a Sunday night TV drama. When the denouement finally comes, it is not quite satisfying enough to justify the page count.

Strike and Ellacott, however, remain one of crime's most engaging duos. I am already eager for the next instalment. I just hope my aching arms can take it.
