On their first night in Paris, the Gamaches gather as a family for a bistro dinner with Armand’s godfather, the billionaire Stephen Horowitz. Walking home together, they watch in horror as Stephen is knocked down and critically injured in what Gamache knows is no accident, but a deliberate attempt on the elderly man’s life. When a strange key is found in Stephen’s possession it sends Armand, his wife Reine-Marie, and his former second-in-command at the Sûreté, Jean-Guy Beauvoir, from the top of the Tour d’Eiffel, to the bowels of the Paris Archives. In order to find the truth, Gamache will have to decide whether he can trust his friends, his colleagues, his instincts, his own past. His own family.

This is another well-written story by Penny. Besides the mystery of why someone wants Stephen dead, Gamache has a years-long conflict with his son to figure out. The characters are well-developed. The story is interesting, if a bit complicated at times. There are secrets revealed and surprises throughout. Gamache takes a few unnecessary risks but all the loose ends are explained at the end. Another enjoyable read. ( )

2021 book #49. The 16 book in the Insp. Gamache series moves far beyond its 3 Pines beginnings to Paris where his 93-yo godfather is run down and the family gets caught up in a frankly unbelievable industrial conspiracy. Disappointed in this. ( )

Kind of goes off the rails at the end (is there anything Gamache can't do?) but loved the Parisian setting. ( )

This was my introduction to the Inspector Gamache series and I quite liked it. Perhaps I need to read more of them to really appreciate it. Basing your sleuth in Montreal would make for some challenges and I would be interested in reading more. ( )

Sometimes the most creative work comes out of the most restrictive setup, think about how great blues musicians work within the strict chord structures of that music, and in the case of ALL THE DEVILS ARE HERE it led to a tour de force of a novel. “Don’t believe everything you think” is a phrase Armand Gamache uses when training new police recruits and I would like to apply that to myself after reading this novel. I went into reading this book with great trepidation. My least favorite book in this series had been set away from the fictional village of Three Pines in a monastery and it simply did not work for me. The magic of the characters seemed inexorably tied to the location. Add to that the fact that the book previous to this one was probably my second least favorite and I was beginning to wonder if it would all work again. I WAS WRONG. On a side note, that is one of my favorite places to find myself, realizing I was wrong and learning something. Instead of it being an unmoored story that felt foreign, having it set in Paris concentrated Ms. Penny’s attention and this book really got deep into the characters involved, including one who had been pretty much entirely off camera the entire series. This story also had what I experienced as the best “mystery” she has produced yet, either as a byproduct of the choices made in the setting or by happy coincidence. I have always enjoyed this series more for character and the plot of their lives as opposed to the plot of the individual book. As always, she is a master at slowly revealing facts and never hiding anything, in fact it is almost all in plain sight. We just can’t see it. I was moved and involved in the story the entire way and found the solution to be mostly plausible (let’s face it if we want 100% plausible then we need to read non-fiction). And this book really touched me, as is usual, in its depiction of family, love, and devotion. She has a wonderful grasp on the reality of family, especially the difference between sharing blood and being family, which does not actually require blood relation. A wonderful read. I could not be happier to have been wrong. ( )
