Leading the field once again, Norton is proud to publish the anthology for the new century, The Norton Anthology of World Literature, Second Edition. See my reviews of the American and English Lit Nortons for my rhapsody on the subject. The "World Literature" collection is a more complex beast, still of course designed for the Western reader but attempting to put history into perspective for the requirements of the modern university student.

Highlights include poetry from China's "Middle Period" , The "Thousand and One Nights", and some fascinating Medieval lhyrics, as well as Dante's "Inferno" (in the Mandelbaum translation), and a treasure trove of Japanese poetry from the eighth to the fifteenth centuries. ( )
