A millennium into the future, two advancements have altered the course of human history: the colonization of the galaxy and the creation of the positronic brain. Isaac Asimov's Robot novels chronicle the unlikely partnership between a New York City detective and a humanoid robot who must learn to work together. Like most people left behind on an over-populated Earth, New York City police detective Elijah Baley had little love for either the arrogant Spacers or their robotic companions. But when a prominent Spacer is murdered under mysterious circumstances, Baley is ordered to the Outer Worlds to help track down the killer. The relationship between Baley and his Spacer superiors, who mistrusted all Earthmen, was strained from the start. Then he learned that they had assigned him a partner: R. Daneel Olivaw. Worst of all was that the "R" stood for robot--and his positronic partner was made in the image and likeness of the murder victim!… (mere)

This 2nd book in Asimovs robot series after I, Robot. It is more a detective novel than a serious sci-fi story, but it does set the stage for the world. ( )

It's been a long time since I read any Isaac Asimov (I read all of the Foundation novels one summer and it sort of burned me out on reading anything else he had written), and I found this for $2 in a used bookstore. It's a perfectly good science fiction novel (for the time it was published - the pre-GPS "guide rods" stand out as particularly silly today, as does a lot of the dialogue) and a reasonable mystery story, but I never had that "wow" moment that pushes a book to 4 or 5 stars for me. This Science Fiction is really a mystery set in a possible future. The 'Spacers' hover above Earth and have been exerting their influnce, without much acceptance, for about 20 years. They have been attempting to incorporate robots into human society with little success and now one of them has been killed. Now one man and one robot must find a way to work together before the situation comes to a dangerous head. ( )

A simple murder mystery is elevated by the themes of robotics, law, prejudice, and religion. While the "whodunnit" was obvious from the get-go, it's what Asimov explores that makes Caves of Steel worthwhile.

This one was a quick read. I liked it a lot better than the foundation series - which I couldn't finish. I did find story a bit dated, however. and Asimov is not known for his strong female characters - and he makes no exception to that rule in this book. ( )
