This book is about a child reflecting what it means to be BLACK. This book is powerful and moving about people, culture, and a legacy. This book is filled with facts and beautiful artwork. Great book for students learning visualization and other cultures. ( )

In a society today where black culture is sadly being undermined by others, this book actually is a celebration of black culture and what it means to be black. This story is through the lens of a little girl which is why this could be a great book to be read to children early on, especially in a history class. ( )

This book is a very cute and short picture book that touches on Black History while making it fun and interesting for kids to learn and feel acceptance. It is made up of vibrant illustrations and short poems. This would be a great book to have in any classroom, but especially young classrooms where students can begin to learn about the importance of Black History at a young age. I would recommend this to my art teachers, English teachers, and History teachers. ( )

A little girl sits on the front steps and reflects, "My color is black...and there's no BLACK in rainbows." But black is a lot of other things - "Black is a color. Black is a culture" - "So you see, there is no black in rainbows. No black in green or blue. But in my box of crayons, Black is a rainbow, too."

Back matter includes an author's note, a playlist, notes in references within the text, poems by Langston Hughes and Paul Laurence Dunbar, a timeline of Black ethnonyms in America, and a bibliography.

Ekua Holmes' vibrant art is reminiscent of stained glass.

Be sure to check out the author's song playlist in the book. If you go to Spotify and look up Black is a Rainbow Color you can find the playlist there. ( )
