We Begin at the End is a slow-burner of a mystery with a cast of intriguing characters and more than one twist to keep readers on their toes.

It took me a while to get into the novel, mainly because I started reading it in fits and starts, but also because Whitaker's writing style with its short, disjointed sentences took a little time to make sense to me. But once I got properly into the book, I found myself gripped more by the stories of 13-year-old Duchess and her younger brother, Robin, than by the (excellently plotted) whodunnit that everything revolves around.

It's undoubtedly a dark, tragic story, but the central characters are so well fleshed-out that I wanted to keep reading to find out what happened to them. As well as Duchess and Robin, we're introduced to their mother, Star, and her ex - and killer of her younger sister - Vincent. But it's a more recent murder that propels the story forward, and we join police chief Walker as he tries to unravel it.

I won't say too much more about the story, but I really enjoyed it and would recommend it to anyone who likes their crime novels thoughtful and character-led. ( )

More like 3.5 stars. The writing was a bit disjointed. I saw from another reviewer that they found they had to re-read passages to get the proper meaning the author was trying to convey. I had the same problem. The story was interesting and the ending had a bit of a twist that I did not expect. I am pleased with how certain elements worked out in the end (I do not provide spoilers in my reviews). ( )

Thirteen year old Duchess Day Radley has a hard life, as protector of her five year old brother Robin, the daughter of a drug/drink addicted mother, Star. She takes guff from nobody, and is a self-styed outlaw. Her only supporter is the Chief of Police Walk, who looks after Star at the behest of his best friend Vincent, who loves her and who accidentally killed Star's sister 30 years ago. Walk's testimony sealed 15-year old Vincent's conviction. A brazen act of retribution against someone who Duchess believes harmed her mother, sets in motion a series of events, whereby Robin and Duchess move away from their home on the California coast to live with their grandfather, until he meets with an unfortunate end, forcing the two Radleys into bad situations, requiring Duchess to make decisions that nobody, especially someone her age, should have to make. Duchess is a wonderful character, with hard edges, and even Walk's best efforts cannot keep her from making some bad mistakes. 4.5 stars. Recommended. ( )

A murderer mystery set in a small coastal California town. Many cookies but the best are locked in the characters of the characters. An almost believable story. A butcher, a car collector, a developer locked together on a freaky dance with childhood friend whose life was devastated by a bit and run accident with one of them as driver. ( )

I can't praise this book enough. Chris Whitaker has created a unique thriller peppered with some the most memorable characters ever created., As a result, the reader is taken on a wild ride, whose ending is never anticipated.

Twenty years ago, a tragic event that ends in the death of a young child forever stains a town and 4 young friends. Unfortunately, despite the passing of time, those tragic events continue to reverberate and shape the present. Reiterating the William Faulkner line, "The past is never dead. It's not even past."

Don't be surprised if you find this one at the top of many "best of" lists come the end of the year. ( )
