"A romance writer who no longer believes in love and a literary writer stuck in a rut engage in a summer-long challenge that may just upend everything they believe about happily ever afters. Augustus Everett is an acclaimed author of literary fiction. January Andrews writes bestselling romance. When she pens a happily ever after, he kills off his entire cast. They're polar opposites. In fact, the only thing they have in common is that for the next three months, they're living in neighboring beach houses, broke, and bogged down with writer's block. Until, one hazy evening, one thing leads to another and they strike a deal designed to force them out of their creative ruts: Augustus will spend the summer writing something happy, and January will pen the next Great American Novel. She'll take him on field trips worthy of any rom-com montage, and he'll take her to interview surviving members of a backwoods death cult (obviously). Everyone will finish a book and no one will fall in love. But as the summer stretches on, January discovers a gaping plot hole in the story she's been telling herself about her own life, and begins to wonder what other things she might have gotten wrong, including her ideas about the man next door"--… (mere)

This romance vs. reality (?) book is cute and funny with catchy dialogue. While it's a perfect "beach read," it also tackles some heavier issues such as childhood trauma, infidelity, and the injustice of unhappy endings—all without dragging down the story. And because it's about writer's block, too, it's another way for writers experiencing the same frustration to distract themselves and call it research (which I may or may not have done while sitting on the sandy bay side of North Truro).

I would have given it a higher rating, but some scenes didn't resonate with me and there were inconsistencies. For example, in the beginning, the narrator's agent mentions the five books she's written, but at the end, she says that someone read all three of her books. And why does she refer so often to Gus's rough and calloused hands? He's the other writer in the book and there is no mention of any physical work that would cause that. Little things, but details matter. ( )

two novelists, living next door to each other, make a bet who can finish their book first. Then they fall in love with each other even though they had an attraction in college. Kinda dumb.

It almost felt like two separate books. I enjoyed the first part where the two authors are teaching each other how to write in the other's genre, but the remainder was nearly nonstop angst and refusal to actually talk to the person they supposedly cared about so much. So irritating. I was glad when it was over, and disappointed the second half didn't maintain the promise of the first half. ( )

I really liked this. The book was a light summer read but it was different than the classic love story. A nice twist.. ( )

This is not the book you think it is. I had a heads up otherwise I would never have picked it up.
Lit fic vs romance is the upfront premise, but it is much more. There is romance of course, writers block, grief, flawed families. I liked that the characters were flawed and still loveable in their own ways. I would have been very satisfied if it had ended one chapter earlier. The last chapter seemed like it was too much. I do recommend for a light read with some thoughtful through lines that still linger with me. ( )
