"The promise of a luxury vacation at a secluded wilderness spa has brought together eight lucky guests. But nothing is what they were led to believe. As a fierce storm barrels down and all contact with the outside is cut off, the guests fear that it's not a getaway. It's a trap. Each one has a secret. Each one has something to hide. And now, as darkness closes in, they all have something to fear--including one another. Alerted to the vanished party of strangers, homicide cop Mason Deniaud and search and rescue expert Callie Sutton must brave the brutal elements of the mountains to find them. But even Mason and Callie have no idea how precious time is. Because the clock is ticking, and one by one, the guests of Forest Shadow Lodge are being hunted. For them, surviving becomes part of a diabolical game."--Provided by publisher.… (mere)

Great plot, wonderful characters and a wonderfully dark suspenseful thriller.
I will definitely be keeping my eye out for her next book. ( )

Nine little liars thought they'd escaped...

Nine seemingly unconnected people are lured to a remote location in the Canadian wilderness with the promise of a stay at a luxury resort. But it soon becomes clear that the guests are not strangers and they each have a secret that could get them killed.

The first half of the book is a completely gripping retelling of Agatha Christie's And Then There Were None ... with compelling characters and motivations. Unfortunately, the second half of the book is overly drawn out with excessive repetition of action and dialogue.

The narrative is presented via the alternating perspectives of the victims as well as those of the RCMP Sergeant and SAR team leader deployed to locate the missing lodge party. While this works well in the beginning, it ultimately results in the aforementioned redundancies.

The inclusion of the relationship between Mason, the cop, and Callie, the SAR leader, adds a touch of romance to the storyline. Their characters are particularly engaging and their backstories are simply heartbreaking. It is impossible not to feel for them and hope they ultimately find peace.

Overall, a good mystery, but the writing could have been tighter and more concise.

Outstanding story!
Like Agatha Christie’s Ten Little Indians/ Then there were none, on steroids. And yes the author references this book repeatedly so it is not a cheap imitation. In a lot of ways this story is better!
The author does an outstanding job of slowing paying out the story.
The characters slow descent into paranoid behavior and madness.
The author also does an outstanding job of describing the settings, how cold, damp, uncomfortable and it is in the woods. How creepy it is in the lodge.
This is a fantastic book to read this winter
If you like Jane Harper books you will love this. ( )

Nine people are invited to stay at a luxury resort in the Canadian wilderness. One of them doesn’t even depart with the others and then there were eight… When they arrive, they find out there’s no resort but a remote derelict old lodge with no power in the middle of nowhere, there’s a storm brewing, bears and wolves around, no phone signal and a killer among them - and no way home.

Sounds enticing? To me at least, that’s an irresistible premise and, indeed, for about two thirds of the novel the execution held up all my expectations: Things escalated quickly and satisfyingly for the reader (not so much for the characters…). I was already beginning to formulate a review that would praise this book as an exciting, suspenseful and thrilling work!

Sadly, this wouldn’t hold up: First of all, I would have loved to read continuously about the developments in and around the lodge. After all, it’s a great setting and almost part of the cast itself. The narration about the lodge which tells of the end of October, though, is regularly interrupted by jumping either to early November and the search and rescue party which is alerted to the entire affair by finding a crashed plane with a body inside.

These interruptions while making some sense severely disturb the sense of urgency that builds up during the time at the lodge. Also, during the search two of the protagonists feel drawn to each other but one of them is still bound to their spouse who has been in a coma for 14 months at the local hospital. There’s no reason for said spouse to even exist story-wise apart from preventing those two people who feel a strong mutual attraction to act upon it. Meh.

Due to the large cast of characters in this book - the nine people, the search and rescue party, some cops, some children, etc. etc. - in combination with the constantly switching perspective I had some difficulties keeping track of everything happening.

The ultimate let-down, though, came after those first two thirds: At that point, we entirely leave the people struggling to survive at and around the lodge and stay for most of the remainder of the book with the search party. Right when dramatic things at the lodge were happening, we moved elsewhere. Yes, the perspective of the search party has its own appeal but it was a jarring departure from people I really started wanting to die!

Shortly before the end, we return to the survivors’ perspective but it’s too late because we already know the basics of what happened and too little as well because White needs an entire chapter to actually untangle the complex web of connections she spun.

The final niggle that cost this novel the fourth star it would otherwise have gotten is Stella’s ultimate fate (which I will not spoil for you, of course!). It’s a cheap and often-used narrative device which I’m tired of.

All in all, for two thirds, this was a truly good read but it went downhill quickly. Amusingly, the mathematics are with me: 66% of 5 stars are 3.3 stars which I’m rounding down to three out of five stars.

A well thought out story that is executed perfectly. Every person has their secrets and as this group of people are lured to a secluded wellness resort - well, let the games and murders begin. They better start figuring out the connection between them, but not even that will save them.

Enchanting and woven tightly this book will hook you in until the last page. 5 stars ( )
