Liz is a high school senior from a lower-middle class family in a very upper-class suburb of Indianapolis. She was hoping to go to her first-choice college - a fancy private school in Indiana - on a music scholarship and is devastated when she learns that she didn't get it. She's very shy, doesn't really fit in with the popular kids and has no desire to, plus she's gay in a town that likely isn't ready to accept her as such. So when her only option seems to be running for prom queen (there's a nice scholarship attached to the crown), she quickly becomes a fish out of water.
A fairly typical high school YA story, with mean popular girls, a sweet love interest story, and the outsider coming into her own at the end. It's nicely written, though, and I enjoyed the characters despite the predictability of the plot. ( )

i really feel like this book needed an editor. there is so much information about things that don't matter, there's too many characters who are barely fleshed out so we don't know anything about them or care about how they act. liz isn't a very generous, communicative, kind, or present friend yet everyone in the school is suddenly ready to lay down their lives for her. rachel is a caricature of a bully with no redeeming qualities- how did she have any friends or boyfriends before now?

it also bothered me that the book was about a lesbian teenager and her girlfriend, yet the word 'lesbian' does not appear anywhere in the book. there's several moments where liz refers to being gay as 'being... that way' and it's so cowardly. ( )

Lovely book. There were points where I was like "this wouldn't be a problem if you'd just communicate!", but then I'd remind myself that this is a YA book and the characters are teenagers and teens don't always have the best communication skills.

I definitely recommend this if you want to read a cute book about a Black teen girl getting everything she deserves. ( )

A senior in high school, Liz has her heart set on attending Pennington College, her mother's alma mater. She already has acceptance in the bag, but she is counting on a music scholarship in order to not financially burden her grandparents. However, when the scholarship falls through, and though the idea makes her uncomfortable, Liz opts to run for prom queen in hopes for a chance at the hefty scholarship associated with the crown.

This was a welcome, fun, uplifting story. It could have gone down so many stereotypical paths seen in books and films for teens, but it truly paved its own way (there is one exception, a rather one-dimensional character with zero redeeming qualities, who exists solely to generate necessary conflict). I'll definitely recommend this to my daughter in a few years. ( )
