Note: I accessed a digital review copy of this book through Edelweiss. Detailed look at middle school and journalistic life in 1972. A quick read that manages to include some of the best lessons about writing I learned from my mom (who was, incidentally, studying journalism in 1972). The friendship/school aspects were but particularly memorable, but at least also not traumatic. A charming, fast read perfect for middle grade readers. Copland touches on family and friend drama, first boyfriends, and the age old question of “what will I do when I grow up?” Though I wish the Watergate aspect had been played up a bit more (it feels especially relevant in late 2019!) this memoir is accessible and entertaining and is perfect for kids adjusting to getting older. Girls are likely to see themselves in Copeland and relate to her honesty. Big thanks to the publisher for the ARC! This is a cute graphic novel. For young girls who are interested in journalism. It follows Cindy as she learns the "ropes" about great journalism. There is more than just asking questions and writing the answers down on paper. Cindy learns how to ask the right questions. In addition, how to edit an article to involve just the facts and not opinions. The journalism portion of this novel was good but when it came to Cindy and her school life, it was not as strong. Partly because I did not like most of the other school kids. They are bullies. Luckily, Cindy found her voice and took a stand against them in the end. She did become a good journalist. This is an interesting look at a girl whose teacher tells her she should write, and she goes for it. She lives in an extremely “traditional” household. Her brothers are expected to be businessmen and make a living. She is only allowed to wear dresses or skirts and if she becomes more than house wife, okay, if not, okay. I hate the father in this story. He so clearly favors the boys and wants his daughter to be his little princess forever, but I love this girls tenacity. Her willingness to go after a story, and realizing that it’s nice to have a boyfriend, but it’s not everything right now. A fun graphic novel for any age. ingen anmeldelser | tilføj en anmeldelse
"Twelve-year-old Cindy has just dipped a toe into seventh-grade drama--with its complicated friendships, bullies, and cute boys--when she earns an internship as a cub reporter at a local newspaper in the early 1970s. A (rare) young female reporter takes Cindy under her wing, and Cindy soon learns not only how to write a lede, but also how to respectfully question authority, how to assert herself in a world run by men, and--as the Watergate scandal unfolds--how brave reporting and writing can topple a corrupt world leader. Searching for her own scoops, Cindy doesn't always get it right, on paper or in real life. But whether she's writing features about ghost hunters, falling off her bicycle and into her first crush, or navigating shifting friendships, Cindy grows wiser and more confident through every awkward and hilarious mistake."-- No library descriptions found. |
