"Isaiah Quintabe, the genius PI who combines book smarts, street smarts, and enough blistering action to melt the pavement of East Long Beach, is back with a new adventure. Fresh off the beating he took at the hands of a gang of ex-Abu Ghraib thugs working as paramilitary contractors, IQ is determined to build a life for himself with his new girlfriend, Grace. For once, he wants to be normal--a normal guy, with a normal PI business, doing the best he can. But this is IQ, and trouble is never far behind him. Joined by his faithful band of fast-talking, sharp-tongued partners, Deronda and Dodson, the cases are wild, the mysteries twisty, and the driving fast"--… (mere)

This one rambled so much I almost quit. ( )

Isiah a bright, self styled private eye is coerced into trying to learn who murdered a mob figure in the Taylor shop run by the daughter of a criminal gun salesman. Many interesting characters put in an appearance, including the daughter with multiple personalities. The story is well told and takes a few surprising turns. ( )

IQ in Transition
Review of the Mulholland Books hardcover edition (January 2020)

There are many dramatic events that unfold for the extended cast of Joe Ide's Isaiah Quintabe (aka IQ) novels in this current outing and its rather depressing conclusion hints at major changes to come in the future for the series.

Isaiah is called upon to solve a complex case where the chief witness and prime suspect is suffering multiple personality disorder. Past girlfriend Grace comes back into his life (don't worry, Ruffin the dog is still there as well) and past-partner Dodson is having a home crisis. There is a charming budding romance story for wrecking yard owner TK which is actually my favourite part of the book. IQ himself seems to be off his game and plunges into various situations recklessly and it is Dodson that comes across as the smarter partner in these cases. That isn't the IQ that I first bought into. He doesn't display hardly any of the Sherlockian clever clue solving that I would expect. But having the complexity of several witness/suspect personalities to deal with makes it more confusing for both him and the reader. The villains are viler than ever this time including an arms dealer, various street gangs and a pair of crazed assassins.

Anyway, I'm still on board for IQ in the future but this one seems like a transitional novel which may feel like a downer for long time fans. ( )

Not the best in the series, but worth reading. ( )

Isaiah Quintabe, IQ, is an unlicensed but successful private investigator who has had run-ins with just about every gang in LA. When he received a call from Angus Byrne he is reluctant to meet but Angus threatens his girlfriend and so has Isaiah. His right-hand man has been killed the police have homed in on his daughter Christiana but there is a catch, Christiana has multiple personality disorder and there are five different witnesses in one body. Add into the mix the return of Isaiah's true love, a romance between a rough but kind man and a tough, embittered woman and a valuable gun who possession if fought over by all the major crews and IQ is in a bind he may not get out of.
Ide claims to be a huge fan of Conan Doyle and it can be seen in the plotting of his novels. The setting is rough and tough LA with the gang-related issues to the fore, here ultra-right wing Neo-Nazis come up against a Cambodian crew, the plots are violent with lots of shootings. Yet there is also a cast of well-drawn characters, TK is so sympathetically handled and Dodson's tug between respectable family man and the excitement of life on the edge is really believeable. Add into that the cerebral nature of the way Isaiah thinks through his moves and this is a fantastic modern take on an ages old genre. ( )
