#ReadWithJenna Book Club Pick as Featured on Today Emma Roberts' Belletrist Book Club Pick A New York Times Book Review's Group Text Selection Following the breakout success of her critically acclaimed and award-winning novel Euphoria, Lily King returns with another instant New York Times bestseller: an unforgettable portrait of an artist as a young woman. Blindsided by her mother's sudden death, and wrecked by a recent love affair, Casey Peabody has arrived in Massachusetts in the summer of 1997 without a plan. Her mail consists of wedding invitations and final notices from debt collectors. A former child golf prodigy, she now waits tables in Harvard Square and rents a tiny, moldy room at the side of a garage where she works on the novel she's been writing for six years. At thirty-one, Casey is still clutching onto something nearly all her old friends have let go of: the determination to live a creative life. When she falls for two very different men at the same time, her world fractures even more. Casey's fight to fulfill her creative ambitions and balance the conflicting demands of art and life is challenged in ways that push her to the brink. Writers & Lovers follows Casey--a smart and achingly vulnerable protagonist--in the last days of a long youth, a time when every element of her life comes to a crisis. Written with King's trademark humor, heart, and intelligence, Writers & Lovers is a transfixing novel that explores the terrifying and exhilarating leap between the end of one phase of life and the beginning of another.… (mere)

Sheer fun and also thoughtful - liked this so much! I’m glad this was featured on Words & Whimsy this month, because I’ve wanted to scoop it up since my friend Katie 🌸recommended it. First of all, the 1997 setting in Cambridge/Boston was a familiar treat! Casey is a fabulous heroine, smart and determined abd also intensely aware of her emotions, including grief. There’s a great backup cast and some cute boys also, and I love the backdrop of restaurant life. This is my first Lily King book and I’ll definitely read more.

Great short read. Depressing at first but uplifting in the end. Well written. Highly recommend. ( )

this feels mean, but - it made me feel things, it made me cry, but I didn't really enjoy the experience. Excellent job getting me into a sad woman's headspace. ( )

This book was my second Book of the Month selection, chosen because out of the five books offered, this one sounded the most promising to me. Well, it's clear that Lily King is a decent writer -- but I found the story completely uninteresting in any sense. A writer on the verge of a nervous break-down, being evicted from her living situation (a shed basically on someone's well-to-do property), working as a waitress, and mourning the loss of her mother must choose between 2 potential love interests. Just... meh. I would have felt like I wasted my money if I had bought this at full cover price. As it is, the Book of the Month was a gift and so far I've read 5 even though I've had the subscription for a year and a half. (Most months I simply skip because nothing grabs me.) I can't say I'm super impressed with the selections. It isn't that the writing is bad, but none of them except one, is a book I'd ever read again or even recommend to someone else. ( )

4.5 Stars

This was such a good book! The writing was amazing. Fantastic even. The ending was amazing, and it ended so nicely. It felt neither rushed nor like it was missing anything. I quite literally picked this book up at the bookstore two days ago and read it non-stop. I could not put it down. Each chapter was "well, I mean just one more. It couldn't hurt" until it was 4 am and I had to force myself to actually go to bed.

Unfortunately, I feel as if I missed out on some of the charm and relatability of the book as I am not a writer or even kind of a writer. I think if I was this would have been a five-star for me. Other than that though, it was fantastic and will be a proud new book to my slowly growing book collection, and I would highly recommend it!
