Harrow the Ninth af Tamsyn Muir

The Stars Are Legion af Kameron Hurley (Aquila)
Aquila: The experience of reading Harrow kept making me think of The Stars are Legion.
  2. 00
Fire and Hemlock af Diana Wynne Jones (Aquila)
Aquila: Very different books except for one important point of similarity.
  3. 00
Children of Memory af Adrian Tchaikovsky (Aquila)
Aquila: If you enjoyed trying to work out wtf was going on in Harrow you'll enjoy Children of Memory, but you probably need to read the first two books first (if you're going from Children of Memory to Harrow you definitely need to read Gideon the Ninth first).

I still don't know how to feel about this book. Most of it is SO CONFUSING, and a fair bit of it is SO GROSS, but the writing is SO GORGEOUS. ( )

I'm of two minds on this book. It was interesting to read, but parts I feel went on for too long (especially in the middle) and I did feel like the payout didn't quite make up for it.

The narrative style is quite interesting and of the sort that the puzzle minded would enjoy, as little details come up that hint at what might really be going on. Harrow presents and unreliable perspective and squaring what happens in this book with what happens in Gideon can make for a lot of speculation. (Take that as an indication that if you haven't read Gideon the Ninth, do that first before starting this one.)

The climax was good, but I felt the denouement was something of a let down. Leaving off any spoilers, the sort of thing I was hoping for didn't happen and that somewhat speared my interest in the continuing story. The end does set us up for the third book, with several questions left open. ( )

This books is amazing and terrible and it makes me want to scream a deep primal scream in the best way. ( )
