Meet Ruby--a happy, curious, imaginative girl. But one day, she finds something unexpected: a Worry. It's not such a big Worry, at first. But every day, it grows a little bigger . . . And a little bigger . . . Until eventually, the Worry is ENORMOUS and is all she can think about. But when Ruby befriends a young boy, she discovers that everyone has worries, and not only that, there's a great way to get rid of them too.

I love, love, love this book. The illustrations depict Ruby's worry as a little ball of yellow squiggles that grows bigger and bigger as she thinks about it. It follows her everywhere, taking up more and more space around her. Finally, she sees someone else that looks sad like her. When she looks closer, she sees that he has a worry too! His is a giant blue ball of squiggles, hovering right by his shoulder. Ruby feels comforted by the fact that she is not alone, and she begins to share what she is worried about. She notices that the more she shares, the smaller the worry gets, and Ruby learns that thinking about a worry but not telling anyone only makes the worry get bigger. By talking about it, her worry gets a lot smaller. Ruby still gets worries sometimes (because we all get worries sometimes), but now she knows how to handle them so that they don't keep growing. The visualization of Ruby's worry is really powerful. This is for young kids, but to be honest, I think most ages could benefit from reading this book. We all have worries, and picturing them growing and shrinking in such an illustrative way could be really beneficial for a lot of people, especially those learning to manage their worries. ( )

Nice art and story, even if the solution to worrying is super simplified, causing much scoffing from my wife who has spent a great portion of her life engaged in worries. ( )

Brown-skinned Ruby loves being Ruby and is perfectly happy, until she discovers a Worry (depicted as a floating yellow scribble with eyes and eyebrows). She ignores it and it grows and grows, until one day she sees another kid with his own Worry (a blue scribble). They talk about their Worries, which causes them to shrink.

The reader doesn't find out what Ruby (or the boy) were worried about, but it doesn't matter - the point is that the best thing to do if you have a worry is to talk about it. ( )

Lucía siempre había estado muy contenta hasta que un día descubrió una preocupación. Un libro y sensible y reconfortante para hablar con los niños y ayudarles a que compartan sus preocupaciones, no importa lo grandes o pequeñas que sean.
