Two Castaways. One Goal. Zero in common. Get lost in this inventive sci-fi graphic novel about an extraordinary friendship and an incredible journey home. Like many late-21st-century teens, geeky 16-year-old Vess gets packed off to spend her summer at Space Camp-which is literally in space. Tragically, a shuttle accident sends her and the rest of the passengers careening toward a cold, frosty death among the stars. But when a gigantic, space-faring water bear miraculously rescues Vess and her beloved retro Discman, it's the beginning of an extraordinary friendship, all set to the nostalgic tunes of Vess's 1990s-heavy playlist.… (mere)

I was really looking forward to this one - I loved Dawson's Sparrowhawk, and so was hoping for something along those lines. But while the vivid colors and wonderfully unique character design are there (a sentient cloud of spores! A mega-tardigrade!), and the plot is serviceable, the tone and the dialogue killed it for me. Everything read like a script someone had written, rather than organic speech ("You are doing me a frighten"? Really?). I appreciate that the authors tried to think ahead, linguistically, and some of it works, but most is it feels too try-hard.

And Vess's pants are very strangely colored, and kept making me think she was wearing very little. ( )

Star Pig by Delilah S Dawson

Science fiction Graphic novel. Art by Francesco Gaston.
A teen on the way to space camp gets saved by a Tardigrade when the transport she’s on is destroyed. From one evil to the next, Vess and Theo find their way through space and trying to avoid probing by aliens. Not always successfully.

Typical teen centric thought process with little care for the rest of the crew being dead. Moving on....we can admit she is smart and has learned her history lessons, but I have to question her opinion that Theodore Roosevelt looked like a teddy bear slash pig.
It is funny that the galaxy is apparently obsessed with the U.S. 70’s, 80’s and 90’s. There certainly is plenty of material to pull from in those years.

It’s an engaging adventure with beautiful artwork. I don’t want to include spoilers, but will say the third guess was brilliantly thought out. ( )
