Wyoming game warden Joe Pickett must investigate an attempted murder--a crime committed from a confoundingly long distance--in the riveting new novel from #1 New York Times bestselling author C. J. Box. When Joe Pickett is asked to join the rescue efforts for the victim of a startling grizzly attack, he reluctantly leaves his district behind. One survivor of the grizzly's rampage tells a bizarre story, but just as Joe begins to suspect the attack is not what it seems, he is brought home by an emergency on his own turf. Someone has targeted a prominent local judge, shooting at him from a seemingly impossible distance. While the judge was not hit, his wife is severely wounded, and it is up to Joe to find answers--and the shooter. The search for the would-be assassin becomes personal when Joe's best friend, Nate Romanowski --just as he's adjusting to the arrival of his first child--falls under suspicion for the crime. It's a race against the clock as Joe tries to clear Nate's name and identify the real shooter, all while deciphering the grizzly encounter. Beset by threats both man-made and natural, the two men must go to great lengths to keep their loved ones safe.… (mere)

Joe Pickett #20
A good read. ( )

This is the first book in this series that I've read - I picked it up at a Little Free Library, & based on other reviews that claimed it could be read as a standalone story, I decided to give it a shot. I'm glad that I did - this was a very action-packed & thrilling novel! While there were multiple subplots, the main story focused on the attempted shooting of a judge. The writing itself made it hard for me to put the book down, which is rare for me. There were a wide variety of characters, & while I had some difficulties keeping track of them, I imagine that anyone familiar with the series would be fine. Reading this novel makes me want to go back & read other books in the series, & I'd definitely recommend it ( )

I gave up on this when character being stalked by drug cartel was introduced. I just am tired of every mystery revolving around drug cartels. Been through this earlier in the 80s when even a simple domestic homicide would turn out to be about drugs and in the 90s when every weird killing turned out to be about abused or sexually abused children. And with fantasy when every story had an elf, a human, a magical animal and etc. on a quest to destroy or restore or discover the magic crown, sword, necklace-----

Another 5 stars exciting western style thriller. There are multiple mysteries in this one; the grizzly bear, the judge, and Nate -master falconer. Nate's story is a small follow up from the previous book. Amazing read! ( )

Long and drawn out story of wife of judge shot from a long range rifle. Too many plots and twists and turns for my fancy. ( )
