Well, for starters is good to have in mind that this is the script of a play and not a proper novel, that being said the scene descriptions and character labeling actually made it more immersive for me.

The 4 stars are mostly due to nostalgia, the story is predictable (specially part 2) and the feeling of "fanfic" doesn't go away, but it was nonetheless enjoyable.

I'd recommend it to HP fans, just because... ( )

There were moments that I noticed something in the screenplay that I had completely missed in the movie. This book adds some insight to some of the foreshadowing and how things work together that you just don't see when it is on the screen.

Even as a screenplay, it reads similar to the Harry Potter books. It grabs your attention and takes you on a journey. You feel like a part of the Wizarding World. I love it.

Newt is my favorite character, maybe because I am also a socially awkward Hufflepuff who is more comfortable with animals. I think this screenplay has a great cast of loveable characters. I truly care about each and every one of them and love seeing how they all interact to make this story unfold.

Stepping back into this world of Harry Potter was like being greeted by an old friend. While it is a new storyline, it still has similarities and the same feel.

I can't wait to see how the rest of the story plays out. ( )

I suppose watching the play would be a better deal, as reading the book version (play script) didn't give the complete experience. It has an interesting storyline, with an enjoyable dialogue, but one should expect an independent spin-off work here, rather than an extension of the original novel set.

If read as a novel, it gives a nice revisit to your childhood (if you were a HP book fan). But the writing seemed to lack some depth in plotlines and character development. Unlike Rowling's amazing style of structuring curiosity and deeply-connected thoughts in the HP universe, some parts of the story here were found to be repetitive and not well-thought enough in connecting contexts.
[MILD SPOILERS AHEAD...] An important and supposedly powerful character seemed to have very weak strategies of achieving their goal. The consequences of the tactics were also shown to be quite random and unreasonable, without giving justice to the character profiles from the Canon build. There's also a part where they again show the use of Polyjuice potion to transform into Ministry employees and conveniently barge into a locked office of a prime official by simply using an Alohomora spell, all unnoticed and unalarmed. Moreover, if one wishes to protect a very important object, you would expect them to have better measures taken to hide it, than setting up a puzzle for anyone to solve.
[SPOILERS END]
As you proceed, you find the story picking up interesting arcs but subplots lacking tad bit imagination while executing.

Overall, I think if the story is treated as a light read/watch, without giving it much thought, you may find it more enjoyable. ( )

Had this been a fanfic, I would've dropped it 2 pages in. Still can't believe this is official. ( )

It read like a fanfic. A canon fanfic, but not in a bad way. ( )
