Working at a dead-end retail job in the middle of nowhere can be hard. The long hours. The helpless customers. The enormous eldritch horror living deep below the building. As the only full-time employee at the 24-hour gas station at the edge of town, Jack has pretty much seen it all. But when he decides to start an online journal documenting the bizarre day-to-day occurrences, he unwittingly attracts the attention of much more than just a few conspiracy theorists. With the body count steadily on the rise and a dark, ancient force infecting the dreams of everyone around him, Jack will do everything in his power to stay out of the way and mind his own business. After all, he's just a gas station clerk. It's not like he's getting paid enough to wage battle against the nightmarish aberrations plaguing his community. Besides, he already has his hands full attempting to manage all those mysterious lawn gnomes, the mutant raccoons, and the charming phantom cowboy who lives in the bathroom.… (mere)

jekier: This book is the absolute closest to the horror/creepy/funny/bizarre vibe of any I've read.

My rating for this is highly personal. This is my second time around with this collection of stories. I listened to all of it on YouTube with the same narrator, MrCreepyPasta and loved it. Loved it the second time around. It basically has every urban legend packed into one gas station and a main character who isn't much concerned with the over the top weirdness unless it threatens his employment at the gas station at the edge of town. Plus, he has a fantastic sense of really dark humor that happens to match mine.

I can't imagine anyone but MrCreepyPasta reading it. I'm a big fan of narrated creepy pastas, so this edited story and audible produced story is a treat for me. ( )

I really enjoyed this book. I found Jack funny and relatable. It probably ended with more questions than answers, but it is the beginning of a series so I didn't expect all the answers by the end of the book. I love books that take a mundane, everyday place and inject strange and unusual happenings. ( )

Jack works at a 24 hour gas station out on the edge of an unnamed town, with much of the place surrounded by thick forest. He works incredibly long hours because they have trouble keeping their employees and he can't sleep anyway, probably due to the gas station being a hot spot for incredibly weird things, like doors suddenly appearing, plants along the perimeter that look and behave exactly like human hands, and a nearby murder cult that shop there. That's in addition to the regular shoplifting and vandalism.
Jack is hard to shock, but as things get stranger and more dangerous with each shift at the gas station, he starts a blog to get the occurrences out there in case anybody has answers, because he's worried.

This story may be the most crazy and fun I've come across. I know that the cover looks like a slasher horror, and it does have some horror elements, though I think it would best be described at "Night Vale" meets "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" meets "Shaun of the Dead". I'm happy to find that it's a series. ( )

Fourth Book for the spooky season! Trying to read horror or at least books with horror elements for the whole month of October.

I was in the mood for some Comedy Horror and this one got recommended to me by a few different people online. And I’m glad I got to read it! It may not be the most sophisticated or horrific piece of work but it does the comedy horror genre immense justice.

It does one of the few things that comedy Horrors tend to fail on, keeping me invested. This story, the story of Jack and this Gas station is very Character driven. There is so much going on with our unreliable narrator, and the way he sees the world around him is funny and sad in a good way.

There is a bit of a niche in the humor department that leans towards heavy internet users, or a younger crowed in general which is fine; I thought it was enjoyable. Made the jokes land a lot more, but I couldn’t help but think that none of my coworkers would understand a few of the jokes. But that’s the great part. There were only a few, a lot of the time these types of comedies can feel over alienating, but the general premise and jokes felt inviting to a new reader.

The Ending with the Dark God was…. Eh.

Overall enjoyed it. Had plenty of laughs, and wound up caring for Jack just the same as all his other internet fans.

Can’t wait to read the second installment. ( )
