In an intense, emotional mystery that spans a decade in the life of a small town, bestselling author Brian Freeman brings us an unforgettable heroine who discovers that the dead may sometimes be easier to rescue than the living. Deputy Shelby Lake was abandoned as a baby, saved by a stranger who found her in the freezing cold. Now, years later, a young boy is missing-and Shelby is the one who must rescue a child. The only evidence of what happened to ten-year-old Jeremiah Sloan is a bicycle left behind on a lonely road. After a desperate search fails to locate him, the close bonds of Shelby's hometown begin to fray under the weight of accusations and suspicion. Everyone around her is keeping secrets. Her adoptive father, her best friend, her best friend's young daughter-they all have something to hide. Even Shelby is concealing a mistake that could jeopardize her career and her future. Unearthing the lies of the people in Jeremiah's life doesn't get the police and the FBI any closer to finding him. As time passes and the case grows cold, Shelby worries that the mystery will stay buried forever under the deep, deep snow. But even the deepest snow melts in the spring. When a tantalizing clue finally comes to light, Shelby must confront the darkest lie of all. Exposing the truth about Jeremiah will leave no one's life untouched-including her own. "Brian Freeman is, quite simply, a first-rate storyteller." "This guy can tell a story." "Some of the most literate and stylish writing you'll find anywhere today." "Freeman proves once again he's a master of psychological suspense.".… (mere)

Complex mystery set in a small close knit town. Shelby's origins of birth are still a mystery. Found as a baby she was taken in by the sheriff. She's grown up in the town and is now a deputy working for her "dad" who is now in the early stages of alzheimers. A missing child sets off a series of events that has a domino effect on the town. Secrets come to light as the FBI is called in and people's lives are turned inside out. Shelby must deal with her dad, her partner, & friends as she pieces together clues from the truths and lies of the boy's disappearance. Spanning 10 years this well thought out books pulls you in to the intricacies of small town life, the grief of a missing child, and how far friendships will go in light of murder. ( )

"The Deep, Deep Snow" by Brian Freeman is the first novel that I have read by this author. The plot is very well written, with several mysteries going on at the same time. Mr. Freeman did a phenomenal job of keeping the story, characters and setting going at a great pace. I love when I read a mystery, and the ending is a surprise, as in the case of "The Deep, Deep Snow". Even though this novel had it's share of mystery and characters, it was easy to follow and a fast read (I had the 354 page novel read in two days).
The cast of characters, ranging from Deputy Shelby Lake, to her father and boss, her partner Adam Twilley, Jeremiah Sloan the missing boy, Monica a family friend and co-worker, Will Gruder the neighborhood drug dealer, Keith her high school teacher (and for a short time, something more), Agent Reed, Anna and others all add to the intriguing plot of this well written story.
I would definitely place this novel on my "tbr" list! ( )

I wanted to like this book. I did like the wholesome vibe of it, from the language to the Nowhere Cafe to the snowy owls. However, something was missing, and the end tied up too neatly. How did Keith so easily forgive Anna and/or the narrator? The fact that he lost 10 years of his life, wrongfully confused in prison, was brushed off as though it were nothing. Also, what was the point of Jeremiah wandering off with a random old man? He wasn't young enough for that to seem feasible. Further, what was the point of the charming, cute vet who briefly appeared as a character? Only for the point of adding a missing grandfather to the story? ( )
