As someone who struggles with new things and their implications (especially if people will still care about you), I found this book very easy to relate to. And the concept of ALL of us being new at one time or other is timely and important. I love each and every one of the characters and their names. I mean "Toast the Butterfly" and "Jitterbug the Chipmunk" and "Pudding the Snail." I could even start to come up with those! I want to know how young ones will react to this story! Jitterbug, the chipmunk, wanted an uneventful life. His stomach churned even when there was a slight change in things around him. One day, he woke up with a churning stomach. He looked around, but he could not quite point out the reason. He met his friends, a butterfly, two otters, and a goose. They all seemed to do the same things as any other typical day. What was that new thing bothering Jitterbug? We picked this book for its intriguing title. The book narrates a day in Jitterbug’s life that can help any of us gracefully face the new. As well as the need to build a solid community to help us navigate tough times easily. The illustrations are classic-styled and bring out the storyline charmingly. The Someone New by Jill Twiss is a simple yet powerful story that delivers the message of the strength of good friends and welcoming the new while overcoming fear. Jill Twiss is kind of a genius. While Marlon Bundo was pointed and specific, The Someone New is a timeless story that functions perfectly well on two levels: it's the story of a cautious chipmunk called Jitterbug who doesn't like change (or new people), and it's also a story about welcoming the stranger (or immigrant) with kindness. Digital illustrations are colorful, realistic, and expressive (they look like pencil or pen and ink with watercolor). "Whoa. That was good information."
