"Some women make headlines; an icon defies them. A vivid reimagining of the exhilarating and sensationalized life of Princess Grace of Monaco from the acclaimed author of The Kennedy Debutante. Hungry for her art and hopeful for the future, young Grace Kelly has the world at her feet. MGM's rising queen is poised to win the Oscar, but she chafes at the studio's increasing restrictions on her life. When an unexpected friendship develops between her and Prince Rainier of Monaco, she faces the tempting possibility of a new role--one that offers the power and stability she craves. But life isn't like the movies. Twenty years into her crumbling marriage, Grace finds herself frustrated and disillusioned. Conflicted by notions of family, career, and the very nature of womanhood--notions Grace herself shaped for a generation of women--the world's loneliest princess searches for purpose beyond the labels and headlines. A Hollywood darling, a fairy-tale princess, and a wife starved for autonomy, Grace Kelly is a woman divided. And though she is confined by public perception and societal conventions, one thing is certain--she will never bow to them"--… (mere)

Fun fiction but in retrospect, it's kind of strange to read a fictional account of someone who lived in our time. I was surprised by and wondering if the $2million payment to Rainier was real or fiction but after googling, it appears that was real. And still she married him! ( )

The Girl in White Gloves is a novel about the actress Grace Kelly. Grace's life was one of wealth. She worked hard to get her father, and mother's approval which never really happened. Because Grace Kelly truly led a charmed life, she is difficult, in this book, to like. One learns how difficult it is to live a life that is constantly being watched by strangers. The book has a beginning, middle and an end that was planned. It is an entertaining and well researched book that received three stars in this review. ( )

Reading this was like wading through tepid oatmeal. Nothing offensive happened, but nor can I say that I enjoyed the experience. A novel needs some grit to propel it forward. I will note that there is nothing in this novel that would prevent giving it to your grandmother, or to your pastor's grandmother, which is surprising given that Grace Kelly had some fun before she got married. You certainly wouldn't know it from this book, where she whines and complains and dresses nicely for 370 unrewarding pages. The writing is fine, but lazy, with the most expected turns of phrase used every time. This book is not only boring, but there are a ton of careless errors, casting doubt on every detail presented. I wish the author had taken some of the time she used to go on vacation in Monaco to learn how to use google. Ms. Maher, Long Island Iced Teas were invented in the 1970s, so it's unlikely that Hollywood starlets would have been drinking them in 1956, and canoes are propelled and steered by paddles, not oars. It's the small details like that that make the rest of the story less believable. ( )

This is an historical novel about Grace Kelly from her start in the theater through her marriage to Ranier of Monaco. The book shows, in literary form, just how insecure and anxious for approval she was, even as she chafed against the expectations of first her family and then her rather stuffy husband. A sad story with an even sadder end. ( )

Determined to act on the stage, Grace leaves home for New York. Only able to find small rolls, she accepts jobs in the movies. Before long, she becomes a Hollywood star and is in high demand. However, when she meets Prince Rainier of Monaco, everything changes.

This book was a bit slow to start. It seemed to take forever to build any momentum. At times, the story switches points of view from the young Grace, to an older Grace. The alternating story line either needed to be left out completely, or done with more frequency. Although Grace herself is an interesting historical character, this book was a bit blah. ( )

Fairy tales tell imaginary stories. Me, I'm a living person. If the story of my life as a real woman were to be told one day, people would at last discover the real being that I am. -Grace de Monaco
If Gracie can marry a prince, every American girl can... I am sure we will truthfully say some day - "and they were married and lived happily every after." -Margaret Maher Kelly
