This is a fairly okay reading. It is however still more young adult reading than the author’s Empire Rising series. The story is more quick reading and the characters are simpler, fantastically heroic and less credible.

It is not a bad book but I had much more enjoyment out of reading Empire Rising. I still liked this one though although it falls more into the average range of books.

Sarah heads out to find potential allies to help them in their continued struggles against the Elders. Of course not all beings are as friendly as she hopes and she soon finds herself in another fine mess.

I have to say that the book blurb is a bit like a Hollywood PR piece for a movie. That is somewhat exaggerated. Especially the part about “new threat just as deadly as the opponents Sarah has already overcome”. After having read the book that feels like a large piece of hyperbole to say the least. Still, these new enemies make for a decent story and some nice action.

The story is a fairly decent mix of discovery, character interaction, adventure and nice space fights. As I wrote it leans more towards young adult so the parts about the King (no spoilers, you have to read the book to find out who this guy is), his machinations, Sarah’s heroics and the ultimate outcome of their “interactions” felt a bit more like a fantasy adventure.

It is a nice adventure though and I did quite enjoy reading it. I will pick up the next book in the series when it comes out for sure but I have to say that I am looking more forward to a next installment in Empire Rising. ( )
