"In the latest thriller in the #1 New York Times bestselling series, homicide detective Eve Dallas investigates a murder with a mysterious motive-and a terrifying weapon. Pediatrician Kent Abner received the package on a beautiful April morning. Inside was a cheap trinket, a golden egg that could be opened into two halves. When he pried it apart, highly toxic airborne fumes entered his body-and killed him. After Eve Dallas calls the hazmat team-and undergoes testing to reassure both her and her husband that she hasn't been exposed-it's time to look into Dr. Abner's past and relationships. Not every victim Eve encounters is an angel, but it seems that Abner came pretty close-though he did ruffle some feathers over the years by taking stands for the weak and defenseless. While the lab tries to identify the deadly toxin, Eve hunts for the sender. But when someone else dies in the same grisly manner, it becomes clear that she's dealing with either a madman-or someone who has a hidden and elusive connection to both victims"--… (mere)

Listened to audio narrated well by Susan Ericksen. As usually she delivers a flawless performance making it easy to listen and fall into the story.

In this edition, it's April 2061 and Lieutenant Eve Dallas and Detective Delia Peabody are on the hunt to find a murderer using poisonous chemicals delivered via a golden egg to kill.

This won't be a quick solve as Eve and Peabody's victims seem to have no enemies. The investigative process goes down a lot of dead ends before Eve and Peabody finally find the connections in the murders.

I enjoyed watching their process and the final capture, and I loved seeing Eve and Rourke's relationship evolving as Eve finally seems to be more comfortable with her life with Rourke.

Cannot believe we've reached 50 in this series! The case, involving the murder of two people by a mysterious toxin that kills quickly, but painfully, and dissipates as fast. The victims, good people who lack the kind of enemies who would come up with such a cruel form of death. The motive stems from a grudge, the kind that only high school can ferment. Again, Robb/Roberts makes good use of both the main relationships (Peabody losing her cool with an arrogant person she and Eve are questioning was particularly fun), and incorporating supporting characters we don't see in every book (Charles & Louise knowing the first victim or Mr. Mira helping notifying the husband of the second victim, a colleague of his at work) work really well in this book. And, I must say, it was very satisfying when this killer went down. ( )

My favorite series! Love the “sayings” game that MS Roberts has started into the series, where Eve quotes a saying and then questions the intelligence behind the saying – it always stops Peabody short to see if she can or needs to rebut. ( )
