The first, A Light in the Attic, is about the mysterious light and how it shines through the dark. The next, Stop Thief, is about a police officer who stops the bad guy. Backwards Bill is a silly poem about how he does everything backwards, including riding his horse. And finally, It's Hot, is about a boy who can't seem to cool down even though he try's things like using a fan and drinking cold lemonade. I think this is a good book because it offers a variety of poems for the child to read. It has a lot of rhymes to keep things fun and interesting. I think this book could use some colors in the pictures though, rather than being all black and white. 00009246 I grew up with my teacher reading this book to us in school. Later I found it and picked it up and another one by Shel Silverstein. Shel Silverstein's "A Light in Attic" is a collection of poems that vary in topic. Each poem is accompanied by a simple picture that compliments the poem nicely. I believe this book would be perfect to use as an introduction to poetry. The poems contain different poetic elements, like rhyme and repetition, that will help introduce students to the form of literature. They are also a variety of different topics covered in the book of poems, which helps reach the different interests of students.
Mr. Silverstein's work remains a must for lovers of good verse for children. Quite like nobody else, he is still a master of delectable outrage and the proprietor of a surprisingly finely tuned sensibility.
