Hedgehog is feeling down and wants a hug, but everyone makes excuses - and the same thing happens to Tortoise. A wise owl explains their respective problems (too prickly; shell too hard) and adds, "but don't worry, there's someone for everyone." When the two finally meet in the middle of the book, they're perfect for each other. This unique book can be read from either cover: one cover has a picture of Hedgehog, the other has a picture of Tortoise. The central double-page spread is portrait instead of landscape, so readers turn the book 90 degrees. ( )

Hedgehog wants a hug, but everyone politely demurs. Hedgehog gets sadder and sadder, until he finds the one person who's willing - and uniquely suited - to hug him.

Turtle wants a hug, but no one will hug Turtle either - not because of prickles, but because of the hard shell. But then Turtle meets Hedgehog...

A unique format means this book has two front covers rather than a front and back, and can be read from either direction (and then the other; the stories converge in the middle).
