In 2017, a routine network television investigation led Ronan Farrow to a story only whispered about: one of Hollywood's most powerful producers was a predator, protected by fear, wealth, and a conspiracy of silence. As Farrow drew closer to the truth, shadowy operatives, from high-priced lawyers to elite war-hardened spies, mounted a secret campaign of intimidation, threatening his career, following his every move, and weaponizing an account of abuse in his own family. All the while, Farrow and his producer faced a degree of resistance they could not explain -- until now. And a trail of clues revealed corruption and cover-ups from Hollywood to Washington and beyond. This is the untold story of the exotic tactics of surveillance and intimidation deployed by wealthy and connected men to threaten journalists, evade accountability, and silence victims of abuse. And it's the story of the women who risked everything to expose the truth and spark a global movement.… (mere)

In Ronan I trust, basically.

Ronan Farrow has a new book, you say?

Excuse me while I search under the sofa for spare change because I must have it.

An interesting non-fiction book written by Ronan Farrow about the story behind breaking the Harvey Weinstein story. I read it as a book on tape. First, when I picked it up I hadn't realized that Ronan Farrow was the son of Mia Farrow and Woody Allen. He has his own back story that is interesting including all the paparazzi about his father and about him being the love child of Mia Farrow and Frank Sinatra. At points that gets brought into the story. Aside from that it is just interesting to see how powerful men in America are able to control the media. Given that, I was also keenly aware that this was written by Ronan Farrow, the investigator breaking the story, so it might be a little biased and while interesting, everything can't be taken as truth. It is important to do my own fact checking. Second, I read this as an audio book, and the "voices" of the women and the foreign accents were horrible and definitely detracted from the story. Aside from those two issues it was very interesting and eye opening. It definitely is a rememberable book and changes how I see the world. ( )

Very good! It took me a little while to get into, but after maybe one fifth of it, I had a hard time putting it down. Shocking how pervasive the abuse is. Gives a good understanding of how difficult it is for women encountering these men. ( )

Very much worth the read. It was insightful about how media works and how power corrupts.

This book is an engrossing memoir about chasing a story against institutional headwinds and corporate power. I recommend reading both it and She Said to gain many perspectives in the world of reporting.

As an aside, I am a Pod Save America fan, and reading Jon Lovett, excuse me, Jonathan, as romantic love interest, is exactly the kind of content I needed in 2019. ( )
