He's really a terrific writer, and what a delight to inhabit Rowley's world for a little bit (especially during these troubled times, as the news is 24/7 Covid-19 coronavirus). I laughed out loud several times, which is highly unusual for me (I like laughing, but most books don't quite surprise and delight enough to initiate it—and I strongly suspect when many others write "LOL" they aren't, not really).

Seamless integration of text and pictures. Disturbing (and hilarious) view of Greg from someone who's not Greg. And Rowley remains awesome and friendly (and optimistic, hardworking, and kind) throughout.

(Note: 5 stars = amazing, wonderful, 4 = very good book, 3 = decent read, 2 = disappointing, 1 = awful, just awful. I'm fairly good at picking for myself so end up with a lot of 4s). I feel a lot of readers automatically render any book they enjoy 5, but I grade on a curve! ( )

Greg Heffley is a huge asshole. The humor holds up surprisingly well, and it's not poorly written. I imagine if I read a bunch of the Wimpy Kid books all at once, it might get a bit tiring though. Greg really is a jerk. ( )

Plot Summary: Rowley isn't going to tell his best friend Greg that he's also starting a diary (ehem, journal) but he is. He wants a book about him, but when Greg finds out, he convinces Rowley to talk about how they're best friends so it ends up being a bunch of short stories from their "friendship." Example of Greg being a jerk: Greg convinces Rowley to do a bunch of chores for him by giving him awards that he draws and Rowley is a fool for believing they're special. There are lots more examples.

Personal Thoughts: I'll admit this is the first Wimpy Kid book I read and I hated it. Greg is a HUGE jerk and Rowley is a complete fool for thinking they're friends. I really hope the other books aren't like this.

Rowley needs to love himself.

It's no fun reading about how toxic a friend Greg is to Rowley. Greg's never been a saint, but with the focus solely on Rowley, we see how much of a butthole Greg is on a daily basis.

Greg, until you do right by Rowley nothing's going to work for you.

Also, for a book about Rowley, there's too much Greg in it. On the other hand, who is Rowley without Greg. It might've been more fun if the book explored Rowley begrudgingly listening to his parents and finding other friends before going back to Greg. You know, it's been a while since I read some of the DOAWK books, but I think I remember Rowley becoming great friends with some other boy and Greg was so jealous!

Anyway, this book was by no means terrible, but I didn't enjoy most of it. I did really like Rowley's corny superhero and how much he loved his parents. Rowley's quirky, sweet, and utterly embarrassing, but at least he's not Greg. Also, I wanted Greg to get more of a comeuppance, and the only time he was seemingly nice is when he stood up for Rowley's grade. But, of course, he had his own ulterior motives. I mean kids aren't perfect, but Greg is just nasty.

-1 for enjoyment ( )
