I nearly abandonned this. I stuck with it but only by speedreading and skipping lots of detail. Sadly it finishes on a cliffhanger and there's no way I can bear to read the next one. So I'll have to use community reviews to find out what happened.... The ideas are great and the detail does paint a great picture of future worlds so I can see why it is necessary - but it was all too dry and dated for me. (  ) Ma_Washigeri | Jan 23, 2021 |  Wowzers! (  ) mjhunt | Jan 22, 2021 | I have really mixed feelings about this book. Parts of it were gripping and imaginative; parts of it felt like hack writing. Sometimes I liked the frame tale aspect and the nods to literary forebears; sometimes I found it annoying or inconsistent or distracting. I'm glad I read it, and I'll likely read the sequel, but I'll go into it with a little hesitation. (  ) dllh | Jan 6, 2021 | I liked this book, and I understand why it stops where it does, but it's an awful lot of build up just to bring the characters together, and then not actually proceed with the plot! I'm also slightly miffed because my local library doesn't own the second book, and I'm having to wait quite a while for another system to find a copy. I'm guessing the story continues in "The Fall of Hyperion" which I'll probably read next.
