This book was alright, but I couldn't really get into it. I don't know if it was because I had to read it for school and that usually kills the joy of reading almost any book, or if it's just because I prefer fantasy. I'll reread it if I ever get the chance. ( )

Melinda enters high school without any friends because she called the cops at an unsupervised party at the end of the summer holidays. Melinda is barely speaking, her grades are horrific, and the only release she has is an encouraging art teacher. Eventually, she befriends a new kid in town, but even that goes south because Melinda is depressed. The entire tone of the book is depressing, but eventually we find out why she called the cops and, of course, her justification for doing so is valid, compelling, and necessary. Good ending, including Anderson's afterword. ( )

Teen fiction; Rape/trauma/9th grade. Numerous awards including Printz Honor 2000, ALA Best Book for Young Adults, SLJ Best Book of the Year, National Book Award. While the topic is serious, Mel's joking tone (and her ability to forget, for the most part) keeps this light and readable. See also: Laurie Halse Anderson's interview on NPR and the consequences of not talking to your kids about date rape situations (for boys, what constitutes rape, and for girls, what to do in such situations so that you're not caught off guard and to know in advance how far you're comfortable going). This novel is a wonderful window into the life of a teenage girl while also dealing with extreme issues. A wonderful read for young adults. ( )

The plot is gripping and the characters are powerfully drawn, but it is its raw and unvarnished look at the dynamics of the high school experience that makes this a novel that will be hard for readers to forget.

In her YA fiction debut, Anderson perfectly captures the harsh conformity of high-school cliques and one teen's struggle to find acceptance from her peers. Melinda's sarcastic wit, honesty, and courage make her a memorable character whose ultimate triumph will inspire and empower readers.

Anderson expresses the emotions and the struggles of teenagers perfectly. Melinda's pain is palpable, and readers will totally empathize with her. This is a compelling book, with sharp, crisp writing that draws readers in, engulfing them in the story.

But the book's overall gritty realism and Melinda's hard-won metamorphosis will leave readers touched and inspired.

Laurie Halse Anderson's first novel is a stunning and sympathetic tribute to the teenage outcast. The triumphant ending, in which Melinda finds her voice, is cause for cheering (while many readers might also shed a tear or two).
