This title is a fascinating look at a reform movement underway in Ireland, a central country of Catholicism. The five contributors include a monk, two priests, a religious sister, and a former president of Ireland who is both a civil and canon law expert. The five contributors draw a narrative line of a clear call to action for reform, with a bold and sweeping plan for that action that retains the best practices and revises the worst. They question the prevailing narrative of poverty and what should be the best and truest Christian response. The contributors trace the history of the intertwining of church and state that brought the Irish Church to its present circumstances, with an enlightening of the political and legal (both civil and canonical) implications of this crisis. By the admission of the authors, the reform plans proposed in this book are not a cure all for the entirety of Catholicism, nor would the proposals fit well in many Catholic countries or regions. Nonetheless, this title offers a compelling examination of what is undoubtedly the current state of crisis within Catholicism. Readers may consider implications for the future.
The Irish Church is dying, but some of Columba Books' best-known authors have a formula for saving it. Including speeches from the 5 Years to Save the Irish Church Conference hosted by Columba Books in May 2018, this book offers readers the sage wisdom of five committed Catholics and their advice on how to rejuvenate the modern Irish Catholic Church and help it become more honest and open.
