Paris, 1893. Twenty-five-year-old Marie Sklodowska is studying science at the Sorbonne - one of the only universities in the world that has begun to admit women. A thousand miles from her native Poland, with no money and the odds stacked against any woman daring to pursue a career in such a rigorous field, Marie throws herself into her studies. She's certain that to succeed in a man's world, she will have to go it alone. Her meticulous plans get thrown slightly off-course when Marie attracts the attention of an accomplished young physicist, himself on the precipice of greatness. Thirty-five-year-old Pierre Curie, famous for his work on symmetry, believes he has found in Marie an equal who shares his devotion to scientific discovery. He offers to help with her work, and soon begins to court her. But to Marie, men have always been an obstacle, love a distraction from her goals. She hasn't come this far to let either stand in the way of her dreams - dreams Pierre insists they can share. In A Mind of Her Own, McLain taps into the luminous mind and complex heart of a singular woman caught between order and chaos, science and love in the period just before the world would learn her name.… (mere)

I listened to this audiobook short in honor of women's history month. As a female chemist myself, I have always had a warm place in my heart for Marie Curie. This brief biographical account of her early time at the Sorbonne was fairly well done though it was a bit too focused on the relationship between Marie and Pierre. ( )

Summer 2019 - Aublible original from Feb 2019;

This was a delightful little listen, with a very competent narrator, nothing bad or good to say either way on the last. I definitely found myself lost in the enchantment of the story and not pulled out of it by the narrator for this round at any point.

This is a historical-fiction of Marie Curie's life while she was still Maria Sklodowska, a woman burgeoning in the world she loved, full of science and men who did not respect her place within the scope of that realm. It's a good rendition of her passion and unwavering focus on it, and little else, because she did not want to be sidelined by any of the female gender roles (and traps) of her time period.

I loved the down-to-earthness of her sister, and the quiet, unswerving dedication of Pierre, who was willing to be friends on her terms, but whom refused to ever go so far as to saying he did not love her or dream of a life where they could be perfect partners, both pursuing their passions in for science together. I love that their love story is one of understanding a person more than bowing compromise, or discovering you were wrong all along.

The end of it -- as we're paused like a pendulum over the question of "Will you let me love you?" -- and the narration begins to give us flashes of Marie as a young girl, as well as the greatest triumphs and tragedies of her life to come, gave me goosebumps. I absolutely recommend this tiny read/listen. ( )

If you want a comprehensive story, this book isn't for you. However, if you want a teaser, want to get interested in Marie Curie's life and work, this book is great! Despite its shortness, you get a fairly good idea of the conditions in which Marie Curie found herself before she got famous. We get some insight into the political situation of the time -- both in Poland, and in France.
The world is about to change, technology advances quickly, and scientists struggle.
There's even a bit of a love story.
It's a great introduction to Marie Curie and her work, and made me want to kn ow more.
The narration was nice, although I'm not too sure about the accents -- but then superfluous accents are a pet hate of mine, and needn't bother you. ( )

This novel is about young Marie Curie trying to make her way in the world of science. "Mind of her Own" started well and I was interested in the challenges Marie, as a female student at the Sorbonne in Paris, faced but I wanted to learn more. Unfortunately, the plot changed once she met Pierre and it started to focus on their romance, which was rather lack-lustre. This novel had the potential to be very inspiring but it missed the mark.
