For more than twenty-five years, David Nott has taken unpaid leave from his job as a general and vascular surgeon with the NHS to volunteer in some of the world's most dangerous war zones. From Sarajevo under siege in 1993, to clandestine hospitals in rebel-held eastern Aleppo, he has carried out life-saving operations and field surgery in the most challenging conditions, and with none of the resources of a major London teaching hospital. The conflicts he has worked in form a chronology of twenty-first-century combat: Afghanistan, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Darfur, Congo, Iraq, Yemen, Libya, Gaza and Syria. But he has also volunteered in areas blighted by natural disasters, such as the earthquakes in Haiti and Nepal. Driven both by compassion and passion, the desire to help others and the thrill of extreme personal danger, he is now widely acknowledged to be the most experienced trauma surgeon in the world. But as time has gone on, David Nott began to realize that flying into to a catastrophe whether war or natural disaster was not enough. Doctors on the ground needed to learn how to treat the appalling injuries that war inflicts upon its victims. Since 2015, the Foundation he set up with his wife, Elly, has disseminated the knowledge he has gained, training other doctors in the art of saving lives threatened by bombs and bullets. War Doctor is his extraordinary story.… (mere)

Plain title but aptly named. It takes a different kind of man to revel in doctor-ing in war-torn countries and Nott brings across his motivation clearly. He was close to death so many times, and yet he kept returning. This book also helped me to understand the devastation in Syria following the recent earthquake. If the situation was already so dire then, it must be even worse now. ( )

This book provides an amazing insight in to the horrors of wars that have inflicted our planet, especially in more recent times. What David Nott has achieved, and the number of surgeons and ancillary personnel he has been able to teach and mentor, both while a volunteer in the war zones, but also in his UK homeland, and through his David Nott Foundation, makes for wonderful reading. I have great admiration for this surgeon, and sorrow at the vulnerabilities he has himself suffered because of his drive to do the best he can for suffering humanity. An that is to say nothing of the professional career he has created as a general and vascular surgeon in London hospitals, providing the bread and butter to enable him to go on so many unpaid missions when called upon. A true humanitarian. ( )

Wonderful. It made me cry, laugh and cry again. Dr. Nott spoke of his life on the front line being a surgeon, the horrors he saw and the heroism he performed in efforts to save not only his patients but also his fellow doctors and their patients. I would recommend this whole heartedly. ( )

I received this book in a goodreads giveaway. I found this book to be a fascinating read!! I could not put it down. I enjoy reading books like this for the learning experience. I get much more of an idea what is going on in some of the world's hot spots from reading first hand accounts like this one than I do from a 30 second report from a journalist on the evening news. Books like this one give the reader a look at the human experience in the midst of war or natural disaster. I have always been intrigued by the work of Doctors without Borders. I so respect the work they do in the world. This book put a human face on many of the courageous medical professionals who volunteer their services. Highly recommend. ( )

A very enthralling ana well written account of a consultant surgeons battles, not only with others, but within himself, in areas of conflict and catastrophe. Gripping and discursive, patient discussing and technically not too challenging this is a great memoir. Advised for medics, surgeons and the general public. ( )
