This is a very sweet realistic fiction picture book. This follows the story of a young boy as he has to decide what to give a family who recently lost everything. It is both heartwarming and insightful as he decides what would best help this family. I would recommend this story to both children and adults. ( )

What is Given from the Heart by Patricia C.McKissack Ilus. April Harrison
This story stuck with me like wholesome goodness. The story is compassionate while still being cheery and bright in the midst of hard times. The voice feels authentic and intimate. It shows how we are fed by focusing on needs of others, which in turn energizes the heart. The story enacts the kinds of labor that mark the route traveled when touching each other with love. An emotionally textured story with art work reflecting the mixture in patterned collage.
In the illustrations, dark outlines hold patterned areas, giving a modern expressive feel of style and uniqueness. The designs in the collage speak of nature and expansiveness. Pictures feel like fine art, balanced and surprising. The stylized people are drawn to be forthright and truthfully themselves, while revealing distinctive emotions about current situations through their simple demeanor.
Something makes the story feel like being let in on a secret. The rural Southern neighborhood adds to the flavor where giving from deep down is natural. Here positive attitude draws from inner wealth. The story allowed grief to evolve to quiet joy, to happiness in the end. Amazingly, the story spoke in easy to understand, everyday thought, right at home for a child. The child, James Otis, demonstrates how a child can give even when he thinks he has nothing. This action ties the story to a child’s heart. ( )

"What Is Given from the Heart" is about James Otis and his mom helping a family that is in need even when they do not have a lot to offer. Around February, James and his mom make their homemade gifts and give the presents to the family in their hometown. This book connects with readers by showing that you can help others without buying materialistic items. As long as it comes from the heart, the gift has a beautiful meaning. ( )
