What if someone could rewrite your entire life?'My son has been erased.' Those are the last words the woman tells Barry Sutton, before she leaps from the Manhattan rooftop. Deeply unnerved, Barry begins to investigate her death, only to learn that this wasn't an isolated case. All across the country, people are waking up to lives different than the ones they fell asleep to. Are they suffering from False Memory Syndrome, a mysterious, new disease that afflicts people with vivid memories of a life they never lived? Or is something far more sinister behind the fracturing of reality all around him?Miles away, neuroscientist Helena Smith is developing a technology that allows us to preserve our most intense memories, and relive them. If she succeeds, anyone will be able to re-experience a first kiss, the birth of a child, the final moment with a dying parent.Barry's search for the truth leads him on an impossible, astonishing journey, as he discovers that Helena's work has yielded a terrifying gift - the ability not just to preserve memories, but to remake them... at the risk of destroying what it means to be human.… (mere)

Recursion af Blake Crouch

  1. 00
Here and Now and Then af Mike Chen (Jayeless)
Jayeless: Both are time travel thrillers packing a hefty emotional punch, with Kin and Barry being similar characters, and their family lives being important to the story. Humanistic sci-fi FTW
  2. 00
Liv efter liv af Kate Atkinson (rstaedter)
rstaedter: A similar concept, but Crouch's approach is a different one.

Pulpy sci-fi page turner if you can suspend disbelief and stomach *very* straight man writing with bad female characters. I did enjoy the mechanics of time travel this book explored, which is really what helped me stick with it despite the bad characters. Read for the concepts and thought exercises, not for plot tightness, writing, or character development. ( )

Recursion
By Blake Crouch
2019, Crown
Hardcover, 336pp

"If we can't rely on memory, our species will unravel."

There is no denying Crouch's intelligence and storytelling ability. And it is equally undeniable that Dark Matter was a smash hit that upped the ante for any subsequent novel. While this book continues similar themes to its stunning predecessor--time travel, a second chance at life--Recursion is a decidedly more blockbuster novel with aspirations of the big screen. After a nice hook in the beginning, and a promise of getting creative with a "many levels" concept (based on the title; think: Inception), the middle portion gets tiresome with repetition, and the ending is expected. For someone new to Crouch, however, I suspect that starting with either Dark Matter or Recursion will be a satisfying experience; my pitfall was probably reading them too close together. ( )

I loved Dark Matter so I had high hopes going into this one. Again, I think Crouch has knocked it out of the park completely and this is one of my favourite books this year. The book starts with New York City policeman Barry Sutton who is dealing with a woman who is about to jump to her death. She says she has False Memory Syndrome and as a result no longer wants to live as her memories of her false life are just too painful. At the same time Helena Smith, a neurological scientist is working on a way to capture the human memory. As Sutton starts to investigate where False Memory Syndrome their paths start to collide. That is pretty much all I can say without giving away loads of spoilers. ( )

I was hoping to be fully enthralled in Recursion after reading Dark Matter. And I did like it a lot, but I was also comparing the whole time. The ideas were still mind blowin and I enjoyed my time reading it, but the pacing was a little off for me. ( )
