One pet crow fights to save humanity from an apocalypse in this uniquely hilarious debut from a genre-bending literary author. S.T., a domesticated crow, is a bird of simple pleasures: hanging out with his owner Big Jim, trading insults with Seattle's wild crows (those idiots), and enjoying the finest food humankind has to offer: Cheetos ®. Then Big Jim's eyeball falls out of his head, and S.T. starts to feel like something isn't quite right. His most tried-and-true remedies--from beak-delivered beer to the slobbering affection of Big Jim's loyal but dim-witted dog, Dennis--fail to cure Big Jim's debilitating malady. S.T. is left with no choice but to abandon his old life and venture out into a wild and frightening new world with his trusty steed Dennis, where he discovers that the neighbors are devouring each other and the local wildlife is abuzz with rumors of dangerous new predators roaming Seattle. Humanity's extinction has seemingly arrived, and the only one determined to save it is a foul-mouthed crow whose knowledge of the world around him comes from his TV-watching education. Hollow Kingdom is a humorous, big-hearted, and boundlessly beautiful romp through the apocalypse and the world that comes after, where even a cowardly crow can become a hero.… (mere)

A charmingly bizarre tale about a foul-mouthed pet crow, a doofus dog, and a menagerie of creatures facing the aftermath of a post-human sort-of-zombie apocalypse. Lots of beautiful found-family vibes here. I did think that it sometimes felt a little bit like a comedy sketch that dragged on and on, belaboring its points, not quite sure how to wrap things up. But it was an enjoyable read. ( )

I fully expected to love Hollow Kingdom by Kira Jane Buxton and at first I did. It is both funny and clever, and the first 50 pages was both intriguing and fun but gradually I started to feel like the book was getting very repetitive and the plot seemed bogged down.

This is an apocalyptic tale that never quite explains itself. We follow along with a domesticated crow called S.T. (which stands for Shit Turd) and his fellow pet, Dennis the bloodhound. The humans, or mo’fos as S.T. calls them, have contracted a disease that turns them into mindless zombies. These two animals eventually embark on a mission to save other domesticated animals who are stuck indoors. S.T. is a smart-ass crow who loves all things human, he likes to watch TV and he loves junk food, in particular, Cheetos. He relies on nature’s information network to guide him and Dennis and takes advice from some of the creatures he meets along the way but he mostly relies on his own intelligence and on Dennis’ superior sniffing to find their way around a very changed Seattle.

Hollow Kingdom tries to walk a fine line between humor, science fiction and morality and for me, the morality came across a little too strongly and the science was never explained fully. This left the humor which was well done but eventually the witty one-liners and clever quips couldn’t carry the whole book. I can see that many would love this story about a wise-cracking crow, but I was hoping for a little more and found myself getting a little bored by the whole thing. ( )

I was utterly enchanted when I read this book while I had COVID. I'm a corvidophile, so S.T. and I were always likely to be besties. Still, the narrative voice was a real pleasure to read and the idea of the book carried me from start to finish...not like a lot of fun, funny ideas that kinda...slack off...after a while. Nope. There was a central idea, what happened has happened and now what? and the whole story explored that central idea. Still, I was tempted to round down my rating for a few slightly slow spots...but in the end, it works too well to do that.

A book I urge on others. I think, sometimes, they wish I wouldn't. But I still will. ( )

The beginning of this book is hilarious, and I was so excited to read it. As the story progresses, though, it goes in a direction that I don't find particularly interesting. The plague doesn't make sense, the alliances seem arbitrary (why does one unlikely group band together but not another?), and the tone is a little preachier than I'd prefer. ( )

This book was EVERYTHING! I laughed, I cried, and still I want more! Irreverently funny, obscene, and yet at times poignantly deep. Totally not the type of book I typically read, but so worth the departure from my norm. 5 blinding stars! Recommended for everyone, because this is the first book I‘ve read this year that makes me feel that way. ( )

Buxton takes a joyfully original approach to apocalyptic fiction. See, instead of us humans being the focal point in the story of our own extinction, it's the plethora of life that we leave behind that takes center stage.
