UNO DE LOS 50 MEJORES LIBROS DEL AÑO SEGÚN BABELIA graphic nonfiction - after over 3 years of interviews and research, the author pieced together the life story of Granny Lee Ok-sun, a Korean woman who was abducted at the age of 13 and forced into sexual slavery as a "comfort woman" for the Japanese soldiers occupying Korea in the 1940s. Ok-sun's emotional story is skillfully told through the illustrations and through Granny's own responses to the author's questions. Wow, I was expecting this to be powerful but it is even more skillfully and carefully done than I could have hoped. Such a terrible, almost unspeakable thing to have been done to these women, repeatedly and over multiple years, to then be brushed aside by the late Shinzo Abe's words and policies.
In swift black brushstrokes that feel both contemporary and, in key wordless pauses, classical, Gendry-Kim follows Ok-sun’s narration of her life (based on interviews) with minimal editorializing. HæderspriserDistinctionsNotable Lists
"Grass is a powerful anti-war graphic novel, offering up firsthand the life story of a Korean girl named Okseon Lee who was forced into sexual slavery for the Japanese Imperial Army during the second World War - a disputed chapter in 20th century Asian history. Beginning in Lee's childhood, Grass shows the leadup to World War II from a child's vulnerable perspective, detailing how one person experienced the Japanese occupation and the widespread suffering it entailed for ordinary Korean folk. Keum Suk Gendry-Kim emphasizes Lee's strength in overcoming the many forms of adversity she experienced. Grass is painted in a black ink that flows with lavish details of the beautiful fields and farmland of Korea and uses heavy brushwork on the somber interiors of Lee's memories."-- No library descriptions found. |
