An Amazon Charts and Washington Post bestseller. In an unforgettable love story, a woman's impossible journey through the ages could change everything... Anne Gallagher grew up enchanted by her grandfather's stories of Ireland. Heartbroken at his death, she travels to his childhood home to spread his ashes. There, overcome with memories of the man she adored and consumed by a history she never knew, she is pulled into another time. The Ireland of 1921, teetering on the edge of war, is a dangerous place in which to awaken. But there Anne finds herself, hurt, disoriented, and under the care of Dr. Thomas Smith, guardian to a young boy who is oddly familiar. Mistaken for the boy's long-missing mother, Anne adopts her identity, convinced the woman's disappearance is connected to her own. As tensions rise, Thomas joins the struggle for Ireland's independence and Anne is drawn into the conflict beside him. Caught between history and her heart, she must decide whether she's willing to let go of the life she knew for a love she never thought she'd find. But in the end, is the choice actually hers to make?… (mere)

A bit of romantic time-traveling fluff interesting mainly because it is set in the time and place of another book, Say Nothing: A True Story of Murder and Memory in Northern Ireland, I just read. ( )

Wow. What a read. This book completely takes you and involves you from the beginning in its sweeping epic narrative. History, time travel, poetry, romance, action...this book has it all.

Anne Gallagher travels to Ireland in 2001 to spread the ashes of her grandfather in a place that he had chosen before his death. After doing so, the most surprising thing happens and she finds herself in another time completely: 1921.

The things Anne experiences in 1921 change her completely. She is an active participant in the creation of the Irish Free State, as well as meeting some of the movements key players. Armed with the knowledge of the future, she is seen as an enigma by those around her who marvel at the things she appears to foretell.

This is probably one of the most beautifully written books I've ever read. ( )

Completely taken in!

I really had no real expectations for this book. I have to say it did take me a while to truly become engaged with the story, but once I was, I was completely enthralled! I especially love a historical novel that makes me want to stop and go to Wikipedia immediately to learn more and this was one of those! But the relationships and personal stories are what truly held me enthralled to the very end. And, thank you Ms. Harmon, for a very satisfying ending! ( )

I listened to the audio book and the readers are phenomenal. This is a wonderful historical book about 1016-1921 Irish history, including the Easter Rising. But it is much more than a history book. A beautiful love story is woven within.
When young Anne Gallagher's parents die, she goes to live with her grandfather Owen. He speaks highly of Ireland and Anne grew up with stories of the island. Before Owen dies, he makes Anne promise to take his ashes back to his homeland of Ireland.
Once in Ireland, Anne is transported back in time to 1921 Ireland where she meets one of the most influential characters of the time. Anne soon becomes involved with the conflict.
I highly recommend this book. ( )
