Eva García Sáenz de Urturi's The Lords of Time is the final volume in the Trilogy of the White City that began with Silence of the White City. I dove into The Lords of Time eagerly, then had my doubts because it's a two-timeline narrative, with one narrative in the present, the other at the turn of the 13th Century. I generally find this kind of structure unsatisfying because it always seems as if one narrative is much stronger than the other, and the weaker narrative interrupts the experience of reading the stronger narrative. But I know Eva García Sáenz de Urturi's plotting is impeccable, so I stuck with the novel and am very glad I did so.

Readers who are familiar with the other volumes in this trilogy will welcome back many familiar characters, but this truly is a book that can be read as a stand-alone. Eva García Sáenz de Urturi writes complex, quirky characters, many of them strong women, and is able to introduce them to readers in ways that avoid awkward lapses into backstory. The three central characters here are "Kraken," a criminal profiler; his wife, a detective inspector; and his work partner, a detective, who also happens to be a woman. One of the joys of this series is that it offers relationships between men and women that are respectful, not burdened with gender stereotyping or predictable sexual tension.

In this novel, Kraken (who is beginning to question this moniker) is swept into an investigation of a series of murders that parallel the plot of a recent best-seller with an unknown author, a pice of historical fiction also titled The Lords of Time. Eva García Sáenz de Urturi moves readers between the present day murders and the text of the novel that clearly lies at the heart of these murders. The novel-within-a-novel reads a bit stiffly at first, but quickly becomes as engaging as the present-day mystery, making the switches between timelines welcome. The two narratives are similar, but have crucial differences that keep the structure from becoming repetitive.

If you like complex, detailed mysteries—whether historical or present-day—this is a title to look out for and to read as soon as it's released this July (2021). You have several hours of deeply satisfying reading ahead of you.

Muchos opinan que es el peor de los tres, que baja mucho la calidad y que acaba aburriendo... A mi me ha gustado y lo he devorado en poco tiempo, también he visto el esfuerzo de la autora por juntar mucha información y documentarse y eso lo valoro. La historia es quizás distinta o contada de forma distinta respecto a los otros dos libros, pero no por ello es malo. Creo que es un buen libro y no merece tanta crítica como he leído... También es cierto que quizás las críticas han venido porque se leyó con mucha expectación de ver cómo acababa la trilogía y los “ha decepcionado” y yo iba al revés, he leído críticas y no me esperaba gran cosa. En todo caso, para gustos colores y creo que merece la pena acabar la trilogía y leerse el libro. Volveré a leer a esta autora, me ha encantado. ( )

Dies ist nun der dritte Band der Reihe um Inspector Unai López de Ayala, genannt Kraken, und ich kann nur empfehlen, die Bücher der Reihe nach zu lesen.
Der unter Pseudonym publizierende Autor des historischen Romans „Die Herren der Zeit“ will bei einer Veranstaltung, die auch Kraken mit seiner Familie besucht, seine Identität bekanntmachen. Die Menschen sind natürlich neugierig. Doch bevor die Neugierde befriedigt wird, endet die Veranstaltung sehr plötzlich, weil man eine Leiche entdeckt hat. Kraken übernimmt die Ermittlungen und stellt dann fest, dass der Mann genauso getötet wurde, wie es in dem Buch beschrieben ist. Dann gibt es weitere Fälle, die Bezug zu dem Buch haben. Während Kraken ermittelt und sich auf die Suche nach dem Autor macht, ahnt er nicht, dass er und seine Familie auch in Gefahr ist.
Auch wenn ich diesen dritten Teil ein wenig schwächer finde als seine Vorgänger, konnte er mich dennoch wieder packen. Der Schreibstil lässt sich schön flüssig lesen, erforder aber dieses Mal etwas mehr Aufmerksamkeit. Die Spannung ist hoch. Unterbrochen wird der aktuelle Handlungsstrang immer wieder von Auszügen aus dem historischen Roman.
Wieder erfahren wir einiges über Land und Leute und die Örtlichkeiten der baskischen Kleinstadt Vitoria sind gut beschrieben.
Kraken ist ein Mensch, an dem man sich reiben kann. Er hat sich im Laufe der drei Bände weiterentwickelt und steht nun vor wichtigen Entscheidungen. Neben dem beruflichen erfahren wir auch viel Privates über ihn. Aber auch die anderen Charaktere sind interessant und gut dargestellt. Der Täter geht äußerst grausam vor.
In diesem Fall gibt es immer wieder Wendungen, die die Spannung aufrecht halten und so kann man sich auch nicht sicher sein, dass man auf der richtigen Spur ist.
Ein passender Abschluss der Reihe und ein spannender Thriller. ( )
