I tried, really really tried. Started this book more than a year ago, and I really liked many things about it, but something on it just wasn't for me, I couldn't finish no matter how many times I grabbed it again and again. Tried read the book, the ebook, even audiobook, but sometimes you just can't do anything about it.

Ein guter Auftakt zu einer neuen Serie, wenn auch mit kleineren Abstrichen.
So hat es mir der Anfang des Buches ein wenig schwer gemacht, denn bis überhaupt Spannung aufkam und es mich irgendwie fesseln konnte, hat es schon so etwa 100 Seiten gebraucht. Ich schätze, dass vor allem die Tatsache, dass ich grundsätzlich immer erst eine Gewisse Anzahl Seiten abwarte wie es sich entwickelt, auch der Grund war dranzubleiben. Und zum Glück habe ich es getan, denn es wurde mit der Zeit dann tatsächlich spannend und konnte mir Lesevergnügen bereiten. Es hat mich zwar nicht völlig begeistern können, war aber an sich schließlich ein guter Reihenauftakt und lässt mich dann doch gespannt auf die Fortsetzung zurück.

Allerdings würde ich empfehlen, dass man etwas zum Nachschlagen spanischer Worte griffbereit hat, denn diese tauchen immer und immer wieder auf. Einerseits gibt es dem Buch was besonderes, diesen angekündigten lateinamerikanischen Flair und es passt auch wirklich gut zur Geschichte - andererseits macht es das natürlich beim Lesen auch ein wenig schwerer, wenn man kein Spanisch kann, da keine Übersetzungen im Anhang sind. Manche Worte kann man sich aus dem Kontext zusammenreimen, vermuten was es sein kann, oder welcher Art das Wort ist, aber auch nicht bei allen. Und eigentlich versteht man ja schon gern, was die Charaktere sagen. Zumal dieses aus dem Kontext verstehen, nicht wirklich richtiges verstehen ist. Ich begreife nicht ganz, wieso bei solchen Dingen dann an einem Glossar gespart wird, als sollte der Leser einfach nicht begreifen. Es kann ja nun nicht so schwer sein, die Worte der Fremdsprache hinten im Buch kurz mit der Übersetzung aufzuführen. Man will beim Lesen immerhin nicht an Suchmaschinen oder Wörterbüchern kleben. Ich bin da recht froh, dass sich die Anzahl der Worte immerhin in Grenzen hält, sodass es nicht alles überflutet.

Ansonsten war es dann aber doch sehr gut und ich konnte mich auch an die spanischen Worte gut gewöhnen, falls ich sie denn in Gedanken richtig gesprochen habe. Einiges, gerade das Ende betreffende, erschließt sich mir hier aber noch nicht. Es fehlen ein paar Teile und ich finde es einfach merkwürdig, dass der Protagonist etwas, das ihm selbst auffiel, schließlich überhaupt nicht mehr aufgriff. Ich vermute das wird nun in der Fortsetzung noch aufgeklärt werden, es wirkte für mich aber nicht schlüssig sich bloß zu wundern und es dann dabei als gegeben zu belassen. Da fühle ich mich als Leser auch einfach nicht zufriedengestellt und hätte tatsächlich lieber ein offeneres Ende, als dass es ganz fallen gelassen wird. Es war gerade für mich auch ein nicht ganz unwichtiges Detail, vermutlich aber auch der Grund für die Fortsetzung des Buches, wenn ich mit meiner Vermutung nicht völlig daneben liege. Für alle die Cliffhanger hassen kann ich hier aber beruhigend sagen, dass das Buch gut abgeschlossen ist. Und im Grunde kann ich es durchaus auch empfehlen, weil es einfach etwas besonderes hat, auch wenn es am Anfang etwas länger braucht, bis man was geboten bekommt. ( )

I actually really did enjoy this book *but* I also really enjoyed A Darker Shade of Magic and since the first half of the book was pretty similar, it makes sense that I would enjoy it. I'm sure that it wasn't intentional on the author's part, because I don't think that anyone would intentionally do it, but the fact of the matter is that this book started out very similar to A Darker Shade of Magic and I think that needs to be said.

Aside from that, the world building and magic system was interesting. I enjoyed the latinx inspiration of everything. The characters were likable - I loved the prince. Such a little cinnamon roll to me, even with the dark magic use. I'm looking forward to the sequel - let's hope there's no magic competition games in it.

What a ride! I truly enjoyed this one, the writing was really easy to get through and the atmosphere was so compelling i couldn't put it down.
Latinx worlds are so rarely seen in ya fantasy so my interest was at its peak! And it didn't disappoint.
Finn and Alfie were really the best part of the book for me! The way they get used to each other was so heartwarming!
The difference between good and evil, between monster and hero is a fine line and this book gave me exactly what i crave for. Grey areas, complex imperfect characters, tangled relationships. HELL TO THE YES.

Finn and Alfie's banter was hilarious! They have very different personalities but at the same time they complete each other perfectly. The whole "listen, i don't like you but i will protect you at any costs so maybe in the end i actually like you" game vibe was strong.

I loved Luka with my all heart, and i truly hope we'll see more of him in book 2.

A really entertaining first book and a really good debut for the author! ( )

SLOOOOW, I mean a snail riding a turtle slow. This book gave too much detail in things that were not necessary, and the metaphors and similes were as elementary as my 5th grade class. Now, I'm a sucker for a good magical, fantasy YA book. No one recommended this to me, I choose it on my own, and that was a catastrophic mistake. I don't recommend this book to my 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th or 10th grade students. It's so slow that I would be shocked if the avid reader, like myself, attempted this book and demanded their money back! ( )
