I try to express only my most honest opinion in a spoiler-free way. Unfortunately, there is still always a risk of slight spoilers despite my best efforts. If you feel something in my review is a spoiler please let me know. Thank you.

I really loved this book. I wasn't sure if I would to be honest. It's a slow-moving book but not at all boring. I found I breezed through this so fast. It's a beautiful story about a girl how finally stops just accepting everything for how it is and decides to find out why. The world described here is beautiful and magical while terrible at the same time. While I wouldn't consider it epic, the romance was different and refreshing. It ended on a serious cliffhanger so now I can't wait for book two.

~Amazing world building
~Greating writing style
~An intriguing plot

~Was a bit too slow-moving
~Major cliffhanger ending ( )

Okay, the cover is bloody gorgeous, and the description is even better:

Set in the world of the New York Times–bestselling Winner’s Trilogy, beloved author Marie Rutkoski returns with an epic LGBTQ romantic fantasy.

Came across this in a Buzzfeed article yesterday night and had a sudden urge to read it. And boy did it meet its expectations! I liked the plot and how Nirrim slowly gains confidence to stand up to Ravenn, it didn't felt rushed and the pacing was overall good.

People can refuse to see a possibility. Maybe they don't want it. Maybe it never occurs to them, or is even awful to them. But people make bad choices when they don't know the full range of choices. People come to wrong conclusions if they don't understand all the possible questions.

But, I think the romance between Nirrim and Sid is the strongest part of the book, at least for me? I loved reading the two of these interacting. Sid is the queen of flirting and I like how flustered Nirrim gets whenever she realises Sid was doing so. The character Sid gives me a lot of Swift vibes from The Abyss Surrounds Us by Emily Skrutskie too!

“Ask me what I thought when I first met you,” she said. “Ask me how I felt when I first saw your face. Ask me how it is to stand in front of you and know how angry you are, how much I deserve it, how awful it is to have hurt you when I have only ever wanted your happiness.”

However, the ending did catch me by surprise! It felt like it all came a bit quickly but sort of made sense too? It ended at a fairly cliff hanger-y note so I can't wait for the 2nd book to be released! Also, apparently we're getting alternating POV's for Sid and Nirrim which will be interesting, hopefully that would be executed well.

It’s rare I can say I felt myself in this character’s world. Nirrim’s actions and descriptions are so vivid that you immediately transported into this realm, with its old rules and something clearly hidden, just outside of her view. The author does a wonderful job transitioning from a grim and unbearable life in the Ward to something far greater than you could prepare for. I patiently await the sequel! ( )

Reading this reminded me of driving down a tree shaded street on a sunny day...darkness and light, darkness and light. Nirrim has innate goodness that others manipulate, just like they use her skills. An escaped bird sets off a chain of events, starting with her meeting Sid in the prison cells. That's the beginning of an alliance that promises so much more, but the reality is that blend of darkness and light, leading to an ending setting up plenty of anticipation for what's to come. The sequel should be extremely interesting. ( )
