This book was funny but not as funny as I wanted it to be. It’s maybe partially a generational thing or maybe it’s because although I was born in Tennessee and raised in the South for the first 18 years of my life, my parents are both from the Midwest so I’m little better than a Yankee. I did recognize some things from here though and Helen Ellis seems fun. I’d like to know her thoughts on certain books or movies.

Edit: It’s also interesting to me how some of the stereotypes I associate with being Southern were absent here. She calls her mom Mama (correct) but calls her dad Papa when I, and mostly every other Southern woman I’ve ever met, use Daddy. She also never brought up the phrase “bless her/his/your heart” even though no discussion of the concept of passive-aggressive Southern politeness is complete without these simple words. I hope she calls all carbonated soft drinks cokes or else I don’t even know where this woman is actually from. ( )

Honestly, I just want Helen Ellis to be my new best friend. So much of what she wrote was not only funny, but made me wish I was there when it happened. . I'm so glad to know there are more books by her that I haven't read yet. I can't wait to see what else she has to say. ( )

Stayed up late to finish because I couldn’t put this collection down. It is truly laugh-out-loud funny and just what I needed... I am however, going to leave the official review of this book for my friend Carla. ( )

I feel like I must have been living under a rock. It seems like Helen Ellis has been a presence for quite a while - and I have had her previous book American Housewife in my to read queue for a long time but I never really read anything about her or understood what kind of a book it would be. She is very funny and this book of essays is lively and a wonderful read. Its been hard finding any diversion lately with all the hard things going on and this was a good quick, funny read. I will definitely go back and read American Housewife. ( )
