It is Sunday afternoon, and Theodosia and Drayton are catering a formal tea at a hot-air balloon rally. The view aloft is not only stunning, they are also surrounded by a dozen other colorful hot-air balloons. But as the sky turns gray and the clouds start to boil up, a strange object zooms out of nowhere. It is a drone, and it appears to be buzzing around the balloons, checking them out. As Theodosia and Drayton watch, the drone, hovering like some angry, mechanized insect, deliberately crashes into the balloon next to them. An enormous, fiery explosion erupts, and everyone watches in horror as the balloon plummets to the earth, killing all three of its passengers. Sirens scream, first responders arrive, and Theodosia is interviewed by the police. During the interview she learns that one of the downed occupants was Don Kingsley, the CEO of a local software company, SyncSoft. Not only do the police suspect Kingsley as the primary target, they learn that he possessed a rare Revolutionary War Union Jack flag that several people were rabidly bidding on. Intrigued, Theodosia begins her own investigation. Was it the CEO's soon-to-be ex-wife, who is restoring an enormous mansion at no expense? The CEO's personal assistant, who also functioned as curator of his prized collection of Americana? Two rival antiques' dealers known for dirty dealing? Or was the killer the fiancée of one of Theodosia's dear friends, who turns out to be an employee--and whistle-blower--at SyncSoft?… (mere)

3.5 to 4.0 stars but closer to 4 than 3.5 so . . . (Rating shown may vary depending on site's rating system).

I have enjoyed this series and am currently catching up on some I missed along the way.

The broken bone china seems to occur right at the beginning of the book, when hot air passengers Theodosia Browning and Drayton Connelly witness a drone take out another hot air balloon, causing it to crash into their tea table. I wish the author would have included some information on what bone china is, are there different types of bone china, is it valuable and if so why? (Drayton bemoaning the destroyed china/tea service or either one of them reflecting on if the loss of the items would affect anything they had planned at the tea shop would have been potential vehicles for this information.)

There were quite a few potential suspects. I didn't really suspect the person it was until the author revealed it--but that is my norm, so your experience may vary.

Also, I listened to this as an audiobook and the reader didn't really make the characters's voices the way I think of them in my head, so that took a little getting used to. ( )

I always enjoy a Laura Childs mystery that includes delicious recipes and entertaining suggestions. Of course, each installment in the Tea Shop Mystery follows a writing formula that very seldom changes. Laura Childs starts with a murder, then little by little Theodosia and Drayton are pulled into solving the murder. Of course, minor characters slip in and out of the story like Haley Parker, Miss Dimple, Dale Dickerson, Timothy Neville, Burt Tidwell, Bill Glass, and Angie Congdon. The story contains much talk of fashion and food and tea and the city of Charleston, SC. And of course, Theodosia encounters frightening chases in her search for the truth. The reader follows many suspects and many red herrings before the killer comes to light. A tried and true literary treat. ( )

An easy gentle read to start the new year with, but probably just a bit too cozy for my tastes, although there is plenty of action and plenty of mystery.

This is the most recent in a long series related to tea and mystery with a well established sleuth. I was fascinated by the linking to modern technologies: mobile phones and email are in frequent use, the "murder weapon" is a drone, and there are references to local terrorism. ( )

This is one of my favorite series. It feels like I'm visiting old friends when I read them. ( )

Theodosia and Drayton take an opportunity to take a hot air balloon ride at one of the events that they are catering but then witness a drone attack another balloon causing it to crash to the ground. One of the victims was the keeper of a rare Revolutionary War flag which goes missing after the "accident". Theo and the Indigo Tea Shoppe go forward with their Nancy Drew Tea, and Theo, in true Nancy Drew fashion, sets out to find the flag as well as uncover who plotted and programmed the drone.

Love Theo and the gang more each book and the writing is superb! Thanks to the author for sending me an ARC - great surprise - loved the book! ( )
