En flok gamle venner holder nytår i Skotland. De sner inde, så da en af dem forsvinder og findes dræbt, må det nødvendigvis være en af dem selv, der står bag. Men hvorfor? Psykologisk thriller til læsere af klassiske og hyggelige whodunit-romaner

Thriller

If you read The Guest List then you already have a good idea of what this book is like. Old friends, isolated location, secrets, and ultimately murder. Once again the identity of the murder victim is not disclosed until well into the book. I like the way the author uses multiple viewpoints to tell the story. The different perspectives add some interest. While I enjoyed the story and stayed with it until the end, I don't think it's as well-done as The Guest List. Maybe if I had read this one first it would have felt new and fresh, but it's just too similar. ( )

A group of friends who have known each other since college get together every New Year to spend time with each other and party. This year they are staying in a remote lodge in Scotland and will have a go at hunting. In true thriller form things don't go to plan.

I haven't read any books by Lucy Foley before and have had this one on my kindle for a while so thought I would give it ago. I quite enjoyed the book but did find it a typical thriller.

I did find I had to keep up with who was who. Lots of characters as there are nine just in the group of friends. However the story follows mainly just a few, Emma, Miranda, Katie, Heather who is the manager of the lodge and Doug the gamekeeper. It was quite easy forgetting which character I was following at times.

Thr story had the classic scenario, an isolated location, plenty of snow and a lot of characters who weren't really very nice at all. Plenty of backstories to flesh out the main tale and a who dunnit.

I did enjoy the book and would definitely read another by the author. A typical thriller which didn't bring anything new. ( )

7 friends from college meet every year for the last 10 years for a reunion..this year they meet at a secluded lodge in the middle of a snow storm. Someone is found dead.. who was it and who killed them? Great mystery! easy to read. ( )

Having enjoyed 'The Guest List' by this author, I obtained a copy of this, which I believe was her first crime novel.

It's set in a remote part of the Scottish highlands during the run-up to Hogmanay/New Year. A group of well off and entitled Londoners, thirty-somethings, are having a reunion along with Emma, a newer friend who has agreed to organise this weekend as a special treat for them. Unfortunately, from the point of view of Miranda, the drama queen who has always had her own way, things have moved on due to one woman, formerly a daredevil party animal having transformed into a devoted mum, there with her spouse and young child, and Miranda's other close friend and doormat having developed her own career and being less willing to act the subordinate role. Miranda herself has never bothered to do anything with her life, having grown used to basking in the admiration of others, but this is now starting to wear thin. Meanwhile, Heather, the site administrator, and Doug, the gamekeeper, ex-marine, both have secrets of their own. And then they are cut off by a huge snowstorm and a guest goes missing.

The story is told in chunks from the point of view of different characters and at different timelines - 'now' when a body is discovered on the estate and the days leading up to this. The identity and even gender of the murdered guest is kept concealed until late in the story, but gradually we learn about the fault lines that have grown up between the group of 'friends'.

The problem I had with this is that it is so identikit with the structure of 'The Guest List'. Both have the same type of locked down location, the privileged thirty-somethings who know each other from years back but are keeping secrets, the admin/staff people with their own issues, the switching between timelines and concealing of who is dead until late in the story. It made this book seem formulaic. I believe this was published first, but the other one was far more enjoyable: I did at least find a couple of the characters in that novel sympathetic. So I am awarding this 3 stars for its page turning nature and well woven narrative, but have to reflect the fact that I didn't enjoy it as much as the other novel. ( )
