The story is narrated by Dave Robicheaux, a fictitious homicide detective of New Iberia, Louisiana. The storyline is very typical. You have your alcoholic detective trying to solve a rash of killings when a Hollywood production crew arrive for filming. His daughter gets involved with one of the crew members and ends up as bait at the end. The way the story was told reminded me a lot of the TV show “The Killing Fields”, starring Ronnie Hebert…a lot of hunting, a lot of questions, a lot of self-talking and he said, she said…but no real action. If you are from New Iberia, you may enjoy the novel more because all of the place names and descriptions, such as the grotto (an outdoor Catholic shrine or prayer sanctuary to Mother Mary) that sits at the end of the library parking lot and the description of the police department that sits on Bayou Teche, are all real. The author, who is from Montana, definitely did his research into the area and lay of the land. ( ) 3 1/2 stars but it got rounded up to 4 Look James Lee Burke describes situations and atmospheres for a story better than nearly every other authors best attempt. The problem is I have read this story before primarily in any four other James Lee Burke books. The story is far fetched and predictable and instead of being in nursing homes or dead Dave and Clete are still acting as they did 30 years ago and with the same level of hypocrisy. Fortunately the authors brutally liberal views and politics didn’t overtake the story but they are always skimming the surface. What I loved with The New Iberia Blues (besides the great characters and the setting of New Orleans) is the fact that I easily felt right at home, despite never having read a previous book in the series. And, this is the 22nd book in the series. So, I'm VERY late for the party. Now, I have wanted for a long time to read any of James Lee Burke's books and I'm absolutely thrilled to have finally gotten to it and also that I found the books so bloody good. I do recognize the fact that I, as a new reader, have missed a lot of previous events. Dave Robicheaux has lived a very eventful life. In some way, as I write this book does he remind me of Walt Longmire, from the Craig Johanson series. Could be the tortured soul thing, and the widower status. And that both have experienced war. And, since I'm a BIG fan of the Longmire series is this only a plus. As for the story. It takes a long time before the case makes sense before they finally connect the dots and that's just the way I like it. I love cases that are not easily solved. And, this one, well what connects the victims? I have to admit that I was not sure who was behind it until it was revealed. The New Iberia Blues is an excellent crime novel and I'm happy to have so many unread Dave Robicheaux to find and read. I want to thank the publisher for providing me with a free copy through NetGalley for an honest review! Detective Dave Robicheaux's world isn't filled with too many happy stories, but Desmond Cormier's rags-to-riches tale is certainly one of them. Robicheaux first met Cormier on the streets of New Orleans, when the young, undersized boy had foolish dreams of becoming a Hollywood director. Twenty-five years later, when Robicheaux knocks on Cormier's door, it isn't to congratulate him on his Golden Globe and Academy Award nominations. Robicheaux has discovered the body of a young woman who's been crucified, wearing only a small chain on her ankle. She disappeared near Cormier's Cyrpemort Point estate, and Robicheaux, along with young deputy, Sean McClain, are looking for answers. Neither Cormier nor his enigmatic actor friend Antoine Butterworth are saying much, but Robicheaux knows better. As always, Clete Purcel and Davie's daughter, Alafair, have Robicheaux's back. Clete witnesses the escape of Texas inmate, Hugo Tillinger, who may hold the key to Robicheaux's case. As they wade further into the investigation, they end up in the crosshairs of the mob, the deranged Chester Wimple, and the dark ghosts Robicheaux has been running from for years. Ultimately, it's up to Robicheaux to stop them all, but he'll have to summon a light he's never seen or felt to save himself, and those he loves. No library descriptions found. |
