This was so interesting. I picked it up because of the title and the cover. I wasn't sure what to expect but I learned a lot. She starts with what happens to her blood as she donates and the trip it takes to be used in a patient that needs the blood. She tells the history of blood transfusions and what was done to make them easier and successful from the discovery of blood types and antigens in it to how it is now broken down into components to help others. Ms. George tells about menstruation and how it is handled in first world countries versus third world countries and the ingeniousness of those in the third-world countries to improve menstruation for girls and women. Accidents are talked of and how going to a trauma center is a now established practice in England and probably other countries as well as the triage done at the accident site. Blood borne diseases are also discussed as well as the future of blood. I found this book well thought out and done well so that I walked away with a better understanding of blood and its uses. As a regular donor I enjoyed this and know that I am part of an honorable and useful history. ( )

A book about blood. Each chapter is about a different facet, from history of blood donation to bloodless surgery. A few chapters were boring or treated much better elsewhere, but the sections on blood donation, the use of separate blood products vs whole blood, concerns around contamination for high volume users, etc were excellent. I had previously read another of George's books, on the international shipping industry, and was excited for that sweeping approach to the topic of human blood. I did learn a whole lot, including why some blood products in some places are sold vs. donated, and how through the world wars we came to understand the power of transfusions. Unavoidably icky in some parts, though, and I felt like the chapters might have been better as standalone essays, as they didn't really add up to anything more than Knowledge About Blood. ( )

Nine chapters on nine topics more-or-less related to human blood, from the system of volunteer blood donation to various blood-borne diseases. I found this very interesting and a quick read. ( )

A history of a fascinating substance. An organ that does seem like an organ. Necessary as air. Still with unknown mechanisms and properties. A history of our dealings with it--love, like, fear, disgust--it evokes them all. ( )
