The adventures of James Somervile continues. The Indians has been defeated but, not unexpectedly, a new enemy knocks on the door. This time we have some good old-fashioned aliens inviting themselves to the party.

The book has a lot of the stuff in it that I liked in the previous books in the series. We have Somerville himself of course and this time he doesn’t have to fight incompetent and treacherous officers and politicians all the time which is a great plus. On the contrary Somerville finally gets the support he deserves and some well overdue career advancements.

There are of course plenty of action, we are talking alien invasion after all. There’s a lot of very well done space battles which is my favorite kind of action.

Given that we have a alien enemy and more or less a first contact situation this time there are also some mystery solving when trying to figure out the who, the why and the how-to-kick-their-arses.

It is well written and with a good balance between dialogue, advancement and action.

I think the only thing I really didn’t like in the book was the ending. Apart from the here-we-go-with-the-russians-again sentiment it also felt like a really cheap twist. One more suitable for cheap soap operas.

Bottom line, except for the ending this is a good solid military space opera and I liked it a lot. ( )
