EMBRACE THE BEAST (Grizzly Rim #3)Nate Landry is living a whopper of a lie. He's an otter shifter, that much is true. Folks say he's the best river guide in the region, with an uncanny knack for finding the hottest fishing spots. And he has a good friend again, a guy he likes more than he probably should. Everything will be fine, as long as nobody--especially Mac--finds out he used to be Charlie Beauchamp, an elite Coast Guard rescue swimmer who failed to save the one person he loved most. Then the real Nate Landry shows up and drags Charlie's grief and shame out of the depths.McKinley Greer knows how to keep a secret. Like where a bear shifter might find the best honey trees. Or why he brews beer but doesn't drink a drop of it. Or that most of his favorite porn features guys who look a helluva lot like his best friend. But suddenly Nate isn't Nate--he's a freaking hero named Charlie--and when he begins to share his own secrets, Mac knows it's only a matter of time before all the things he's stashed in the darkest den of his heart get hauled into the light.EMBRACE THE BEAST is the 3rd book (33,000 words) of GRIZZLY RIM, a steamy paranormal romance series featuring M/M heroes of all stripes.GRIZZLY RIM SeriesThe men of Grizzly Rim are a lot of things, but always human isn't one of them. Embrace the Beast is the third, and what looks like the final, book in the Grizzly Rim series. This series is about various shifters living in Alaska. This particular book focuses on Nate Landry, an otter shifter, and McKinley ‘Mac’ Greer, a Grizzly shifter. The book is told in third person through both Nate’s and Mac’s povs.

3.5 Stars

This book is a friends to lovers tale, and the secrets that haunt the two characters, how they kept those secrets from each other, and the affect those secrets had on their relationship.

First, Nate isn’t really Nate, he changed his name when he ran to Alaska. His real name is Charlie Beauchamp. That’s one secret we find out soon after the story opens.

The story starts shortly before the ending of the previous book. If I remember correctly, that’s how the author did it with the second book too. She started the second book, before the ending of the first book. I wasn’t sure I would like this method, but I think it works. The one thing I didn’t like about the writing style, was that there was a lot of monologue. I’m not a fan of monologue because most of the time it comes across as telling instead of showing, and that’s what happened in this case. Lots of telling, although the dialogue was better.

Charlie, being an otter shifter, has the same type of human personality. He’s friendly, chatty and active. Mac on the other hand is gruff, not very outgoing and minds his own business. I think they suited each other well and the author did a good job of bringing them together. I enjoyed how their relationship progressed. The one thing the author never tells us is what was it that lead to Charlie’s brother’s death. He drowned sure, but why was he in the water? They weren’t on a job to rescue anyone. The other thing we never find out, is the past history of Mac’s alcoholism. What lead up to it, how he resolved it, and how he started his bar. I wanted to know Mac’s past, but we never learned much about it, even when Charlie asks him direct questions, so I felt almost like the characters were incomplete and brushed over. It left me unsatisfied as to their history.

Embrace the Beast is a fast read and goes well with the first two books in the series. We see a few of the returning characters from previous books in this one. This book feels more romance driven than the first two books, it also seems to take place more indoors. I enjoyed the dialogue and interaction of Charlie and Mac, even though Mac’s history felt incomplete. I didn’t however, like the loads of monologue. I would guess half the book, if not more, is monologue. This leads to a lot of telling. Even though it does have telling, I probably enjoyed this book the most out of the three stories because Charlie and Mac already had a friendship and their friendship blossomed into love. I give this story, 3.5 stars, but raise it to 4 Stars, because of the connection between the characters.

I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review

I was so excited to finally read this next installment in the Grizzly Rim series. At the end of book 2 ([b:Surrender the Chase|26700222|Surrender the Chase (Grizzly Rim, #2)|Mia West|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1442629304s/26700222.jpg|46052744]), we see Nate running out of the bar when the REAL "Nate" comes walking in. I was dying to know what his story was. I was glad to know that Nate was still the good guy I envisioned him from the first 2 books. He wasn't hiding out pretending to be Nate because he was on the run for murder or anything crazy like that. He was just trying to escape pain.

Nate and Mac have been friends for 5 years. They have been attracted to each other, but never acted on it and never knew the other was interested (although everyone else was wondering when they'd wise up). When Mac takes Nate in after Nate's house gets destroyed by water, their relationship quickly accelerates. There were times I wish I had seen (or at least been told) about where they stood in the beginning. It seemed they were keeping it quiet, but then had no qualms about making out in the restaurant where people could walk in on them. Although that was a moment that made me think "huh???", it didn't detract from my enjoyment of the book. I loved reading/learning about Charlie, and his story and struggle made me cry right along with him. It was beautifully written. I am continuing to adore this series. ( )
