The dramatic true story of German pastor and Nazi resistor Dietrich Bonhoeffer comes to life in this award-winning graphic novel from John Hendrix.

I really thoroughly enjoyed this graphic novel. I learned a lot about the Nazis and Hitler's rise to power. It's hard to put this book down. Anyone who enjoys history will soak up this book. ( )

John Hendrix brings Dietrich Bonhoeffer into the spotlight and the complexities of dissenting to a powerful, tyranical regime. Bonhoeffer was a German pastor who was incontent with how the German people, particularly the church, were aiding and abeting a series of laws that dehumanized Jews and other German people on the fringes of society. While preaching, he was presented with a role in a plot to kill Hitler. The graphic novel goes through his philisophical writings on ethics, religion, civil disobedience, and the ill fated plot.

What I liked:

The question many of students ask when discussing the Holocaust was "Why didn't the German people stop the Nazi's?". This book takes an honest look at the behaviors that German people permitted that led to the escalation of treatment against Hitler's "Undesirables". Going further, it goes into detail how difficult resistance was, even if you were a part of the preferred demographic in the Third Reich.

What I Missed:

The art style refects the severity and duality of choices that had to be made by Bonhoeffer- sharp lines, use of blue, black, and red- however, there needed to be a larger variety of intensity and softness to match the tone of some beats of the story- such as his formative years and the small moments of hope while creating the plan. I also would have liked the graphic novel more if it was condensed and editing about 10 percent more- or find a way to integrate his philosophy into the artwork, rather than just text on the page. This book was an ALA YALSA Excellence in Nonfiction Finalist in 2019. The book is a hybrid between traditional YA nonfiction and that of a graphic novel. The author is a well known graphic novel artist and designer. Some of the pages are laid out in the traditional framed graphic novel format and some of the pages are full page graphic novel spreads, while others are laid out in text rich pages accompanied by illustrations. Direct quotes from Bonhoeffer and his associates are scattered throughout the book and are indicated by asterisks. The coloration is blue, red, and black, all in modern shades of those colors.

The book succeeds on many levels. The author has managed to distill the writings, beliefs, and historical facts of Bonhoeffer's life down to their simplest essence that makes it understandable for young readers. This also simplifies the underlying philosophy. None of this downplays the importance of that philosophy or comes across as condescending to the reader - probably to every reader no matter their age. Bonhoeffer's life is full of philosophical struggle and this book brings that struggle to life. It also provides the background for much of what has developed into the theology of action that is followed by the current Pope and many religious leaders in the developing world. The illustrations are dynamic, intensely emotional, and sometimes shocking and serve the story and that period of history very well. This would be an excellent book for use in Middle School discussion groups. Well, for any book discussion group, for that matter. I can't say enough good things about this book. The quality of this book was certainly a surprise to me, and it is a book that will stay with me for some time. It made an impact and an author can't hope for more than that. ( )

Great graphic presentation with only a few places where text was difficult to read due to color palette choices (red on black a tough read). Amazing bio work here. ( )
