"Two brothers meet at the remote fence line separating their cattle ranches in the lonely outback. In an isolated belt of Queensland, they are each other's nearest neighbor, their homes four hours' drive apart. The third brother lies dead at their feet. Something caused Cam, the middle child who had been in charge of the family homestead, to die alone in the middle of nowhere. So the eldest brother returns with his younger sibling to the family property and those left behind. But the fragile balance of the ranch is threatened. Amidst the grief, suspicion starts to take hold, and the eldest brother begins to wonder if more than one among them is at risk of crumbling as the weight of isolation bears down on them all." -- Amazon.… (mere)

I was not quite sure when I started this book what to expect. I enjoyed Jane Harper’s previous books, but the description of the book just didn’t grab me. I am very glad I gave it a shot though. I will say the ending was totally not what I expected. There were parts that I suspected but the ultimate outcome had never even crossed my mind. I love it when that happens! ( )

(7) This a a fine mystery. Quite atmospheric. I thought I had read this author before and didn't care for her, but I see now I was wrong. This is set in the Outback of Australia. A man from a close knit small community is found dead - a loving father, husband, son, and local property owner. He is found dead from heat exposure in the shadow of an old abandoned grave in the desert. His car is found several miles away in perfectly working order, stock full of fuel, water, and food. Why would he walk off alone into the desert?

Harper lets it spool out slowly with subtle story-telling and nice psychological tension. I did not work out the truth necessarily but could see it begin to take shape much like watching a painting being made (in a nice shout out to the 'Stockman's Grave.'). Each layer adding a dawning if still abstract understanding. . .

I realized at the very end, her books may be linked and that this isn't the first. Much like Tana French's amazing mysteries where they stand alone but characters from one go on and star in the next. This is well above genre mystery writing. I plan to get her other books. Recommended for lovers of well-written quiet mysteries, that are more about psychology, and place, and character than they are about sleuthing. . . ( )
