Two years before he died, St. Thomas Aquinas -- probably the greatest teacher the Church has ever known -- was asked by his assistant, Brother Reginald, to write a simple summary of the Faith of the Catholic Church for those who lacked the time or the stamina to tackle his massive Summa Theologica. In response, the saint quickly set down -- in language that non-scholars can understand -- his insights into the major topics of theology: the Trinity, Providence, the Incarnation, the Last Judgment, and much more. Here, then, is not only St. Thomas's concise statement of the key elements of his thought, but a handy reference source for the essential truths of the Catholic Faith.… (mere)

Christians believe that God is a Trinity and also that He became man, but almost none understand these central truths of faith. St. Thomas Aquinas wrote this work to help men love God more by coming to know Him better--in His humanity, in His divinity, and in His manifold relations to man and creation. A masterpiece of brevity, readability, and profundity.--The Thomist.

From the Church's greatest theologian: the essentials of Catholic doctrine. This book contains Aquinas's simple summary of the Faith. He covers the Trinity, Providence, the Incarnation, the Last Judgment, and much more. It's a concise statement of the key doctrines and elements of the Faith.

This is a much shorter version of the more famous Summa Theologiæ, written by Saint Thomas as an effort to simplify his much more scholarly work. For Thomists, I heavily recommend this book as a way to extract the general ideas of Saint Thomas's thought on a particular subject, before filling in the details with his larger works. The Compendium Theologiæ will, however, always remain on my bookshelf as a great way for inexperienced people to introduce themselves to Saint Thomas, without having to go through a different author. St. Thomas Aquinas' own attempt to condense the Summa Theologica. While the book retains the principles outlined in the full text, it loses some of its logical flow and power. Gaps in logic appear, and conclusions sometimes seem forced rather than necessary. ( )
